The Recipe for Motivation

The Recipe for Motivation

How often do you wonder about what would keep you motivated to achieve the goals you aim for?

I would like to share with you a simple recipe.

I have been researching the topic of motivation. I have read several books, listened to various videos, introspected myself and reflected on the outcomes of my coaching sessions with various leaders.

So, I would like you to try what I am recommending and please let me know if it works for you.

Before I tell you the specific steps involved, let me share my thoughts on this topic.

Based on my research, and what I observed, we have something that I call an "enlightenment motivation" and another type of motivation, which I will share in a few seconds.

When we watch an inspirational video or listen to a motivational speaker or read about someone's success story, we get enlightened about the possibilities and the potential all human beings have. This is usually followed by a sudden rush of 'I can do it' or 'I want to do it too' attitude that will set in. After a few minutes, or few hours or may be after a few days, this euphoric feeling usually fades away.

I believe most of us would have experienced this at least once, if not several times, in our lives.

I most certainly have in the past and still do, every now and again.

Then the next question is, why that doesn't translate into actions or results.

The paradox is, it gets translated into action or results, only if we take action!!

At this point, some of you may feel like stopping reading this article any further!

Because, it sounds cliché, philosophical or whatever else you may want to call it!

Here is where I would like to share the recipe for real motivation to do things.

And that motivation is what I call, "action motivation" – the motivation you get once you take action.

Yes, we get motivated further if we take action and start seeing the results of our actions.

This action motivation is something we often complain that we don't have.

Once we taste a little bit of success taking us closer to our goal, it gives us the motivation to continue with our efforts.

So the secret is to break down your goal into smaller chunks of hourly or daily tasks or as appropriate to your goals and then once you complete that smaller chunk, celebrate it!

Tell yourself, "Yes, I did it".

Use your fist and hand and say it out loud "Yes, I did it"

Celebrate with whatever reward as you feel right. It could be sharing the initial achievement with someone, noting the achievement in your diary with a tick mark or crossing it off the to-do list, having your favorite food or dessert, or watching a movie or something on TV that you enjoy.

Reward yourself and celebrate.

This realization of action completion will motivate you to tackle the next task on your list to achieve your goal.

Let me summarize the process in simple terms

  • What is your Goal?
  • Write this down on a notepad
  • Break it down into smaller chunks as appropriate (hourly, daily…)
  • Write these down too on the notepad
  • Celebrate even the fact that you have done the above steps
  • Start working on the first item in the list. (Be kind to yourself and keep simpler tasks at the top of the list)
  • Once you complete it, strike it off from the list and celebrate your success!!
  • Repeat the process

The one thing you need to remember, is to let your goals be in alignment with your Life Purpose. When they are in alignment, you will have a thoroughly enjoyable journey.

So start writing down your goals and take the first step and celebrate! Keep it going!

Thanks for sharing this Johncey George! Motivation is driven by rewards. Breaking down larger goals into smaller ones, and rewarding ourselves when we achieve the smaller goals certainly helps in staying motivated.

True. Your action speaks about where you are heading or where you want to go.

Well Said. This is the biggest problem many of us have. We want to do something but not able to do. The first thing is to write IT and then START IT.
