Recharging for Impact: Embrace the Power of Intentional Breaks

Long time, right? I know, I know. I decided to pause this newsletter for several weeks as I was very much in need of a break. Not the traditional beach vacation, but rather an intentional retreat. One where I could unlearn, empty my cup, and reconnect with myself. After all, innovation starts with "I."
I returned to a place that holds deep significance for me—the Sahara desert. It was here, nearly five years ago, that I first scribbled notes and recorded bits of inspiration while researching for my book, Innovation Starts With I. The desert became my sanctuary, a space where I could hear my own thoughts amidst the vast silence. This time, I was drawn back for a different kind of renewal.
Coincidentally, the annual House of Beautiful Business gathering, which I usually attend, was being held in Tangier, right before my two-year program at 美国哈佛商å¦é™¢ (Owner/President Management) was set to begin. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to make a meaningful trip out of it with a close friend and my cousin. We journeyed through Morocco, from the bustling streets of Casablanca to the serene dunes of Merzouga, from the cultural heart of Fez to the blue-hued alleys of Chefchaouen, and finally to Tangier.
However, the trip wasn’t just a leisurely escape. I had to prepare for Harvard by studying 45 case studies, a task that felt daunting while trying to empty my mind and absorb new surroundings. Balancing intense study with travel pushed me to develop a discipline I hadn’t tapped into before. The journey became a powerful reminder of the need to step back and create space for reflection and growth.
In Morocco, I experienced a profound full-circle moment. Amidst the beautiful chaos and tranquility, I realized that a three-week break wasn’t enough. What I needed was a longer, more intentional break—a year to go back to the drawing board, integrate my insights from Harvard, and align my actions with my values. I needed a period of shedding what no longer served me to ramp up intentionally towards fulfilling my mission.
Why Intentional Breaks are Essential
1. Reconnecting with Yourself
Taking intentional breaks allows us to disconnect from our daily hustle and reconnect with our inner selves. By stepping away from constant demands and distractions, we create space for self-reflection and personal growth. During my time in the Sahara desert, I found clarity and inspiration that profoundly impacted my journey. It's in these moments of solitude and silence that we can truly listen to our inner voice and gain a fresh perspective on our goals and values.

2. Enhancing Creativity and Innovation
Innovation starts with "I," and taking breaks is a crucial part of that process. When we're constantly in "go" mode, our minds become cluttered, and creativity can be stifled. Breaks provide the mental space needed to think differently and approach challenges with a fresh mindset. My trip to Morocco, despite being filled with activities, allowed me to step back and see things from a new angle. This rejuvenation is essential for any entrepreneur or leader looking to foster innovation and stay ahead in their field.
3. Preventing Burnout and Maintaining Well-Being
In our hustle culture, we often fear that taking a break means falling behind. However, this mindset can lead to burnout, reducing our overall effectiveness and well-being. Intentional breaks are investments in our health and longevity. They enable us to recharge, prevent burnout, and return to our work with renewed energy and focus. Whether it's a short walk in nature, a weekend getaway, or a sabbatical, these breaks are vital for maintaining a sustainable and fulfilling career.
Practical Steps to Take Intentional Breaks
- Disconnect to Reconnect: Leave your devices behind and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. This can help in emptying your mental cup and making room for new ideas and perspectives. I struggled to leave my laptop behind, which I finally did, and mostly stayed off social media. My semi-digital detox was a huge step for me, but enabled me to be more present.
- Create a Routine: Establish a morning and evening routine that includes moments of stillness and reflection. This daily practice can keep you grounded and centered. I found it difficult to do this during my trip and at Harvard (and gave myself some grace) but implemented it as soon as I returned.
- Schedule Regular Breaks: Treat breaks as non-negotiable appointments with yourself. Whether it’s a yearly sabbatical or weekly downtime, prioritize these moments to ensure you stay balanced and rejuvenated. I came back to a slower-paced schedule after my travels and cut down my virtual meeting duration to create more space for breaks.??
I challenge you to take a moment to empty your cup and create space for new possibilities. Start small by taking a walk in nature, enjoying a night off with your friends, or reading that book you've always wanted to dive into. Schedule breaks into your calendar, and treat them as non-negotiable appointments with yourself. You might be surprised at the amazing things that come your way when you create space for possibility.

8 个月Thanks so much for sharing! I’m in a very similar place as you. Both of my kids are at Sleepaway Camp and it’s been incredible to not only have the break from the mental load, but also the reality of not constantly thinking about the well-being of two other human beings. It’s been an amazing break to focus on myself and my business, and I’m loving everything that is coming out of it.
