Recharge. Reset. Reframe.

On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we delve into the salient points of an increasingly complex and competitive work environment. Based on research by INSEAD faculty and collaborators, we offer insights into how to restore balance and mental well-being.

1. Workload: What can help us stay afloat when our workload surges? It appears that deriving a strong sense of meaning from work can act as a built-in psychological buffer against burnout, according to a study by Winnie Jiang . Meaning can come from doing what you love, doing something positive for the world or from challenging yourself and growing in a new position.

2. Work culture: Increasingly, teams are structured to make organisations faster, more flexible and more efficient. But they may not factor in enough time for people to form true human connections . Short-lived and superficial relationships eventually end in loneliness. This is a structural – and not just personal – problem, which calls for a structural solution, according to Mark Mortensen and Connie Noonan Hadley .

3. Technology: The difficulty of coping with the constant demands of tech devices (i.e. "technostress") can affect well-being. The habitual checking for messages, emails or missed calls can devolve into mental health issues, such as uncontrollable compulsive behaviours or addiction. Employees should be allowed to set stronger boundaries about the use of tech devices in their role, say Pawel Korzynski , Caroline Rook , Elizabeth Florent Treacy PhD and Manfred Kets de Vries .

4. Self: What if no one is really holding you back – except yourself? Self-defeating habits such as fear of success, fear of failure, perfectionism and the reluctance to take responsibility can hinder you from realising your potential. Manfred Kets de Vries says breaking the cycle of self-sabotage begins with the acceptance that being alive means trying to be the very best version of yourself.
