??Recharge Before Fall: Your Summer Permission Slip
Like most folks in the summer months, I’m focused on min-maxing every moment I’m tied to my desk and not outside running around the woods with my dogs or jumping into the nearest fresh body of water. Not familiar with the concept of min-maxing? It originally surfaced as a video/role-playing game concept whereby you optimize a character by assigning all, or nearly all, skills points to the ability essential to that character’s success in a specified role or environment….and no points to any other skills. When dealing with gains, it is referred to as "maximin" – to maximize the minimum gain.?
Or as one gamer explained on Reddit, “It’s the process of creating a character that possesses the best possible chances of success with a certain skill, to the exclusion of everything else. What matters is that this skill is almost guaranteed to succeed and that the resulting character will have no personality.”
Although I love the idea of guaranteed success, achieving it at the expense of a personality makes this strategy sound a lot less appealing.?
So, if, like me, you’re suffering from the summer brain drain, consider these last 27 days before it’s officially Fall as your opportunity to set aside stressing about the continual need to keep upskilling on Generative AI or doomscrolling through geopolitical news in favor of giving your psyche a break that will set you up for a killer Q4 sprint.???
As such, rather than filling this missive with our take on the psychology of the most effective executive teams, or sharing how a common language can transform multinational companies and drive global expansion, we’re taking a break. Consider this your permission slip to do the same. Go read a fiction book (you know, just for fun), give forest bathing a try, hit a playground with your kids, or catch up on some sleep.?
Not able to pry yourself away from your desk? Here are two business-related carrots you can nibble on:
Headed to ESOMAR Congress in Athens? I’ve been a part-time Athens resident for nearly 15 years and, along with the team at Growgetter, I’ve curated a “locals guide” that’s worth checking out if this is your first visit to the ancient city. Download it here.
