IF THE RECESSION IS COMING, LET'S BULLETPROOF YOUR JOB!

IF THE RECESSION IS COMING, LET'S BULLETPROOF YOUR JOB!

Although our government hasn't officially used the "R" word, all signs are pointing to the economic facts that employment rates will be slowing down.?

I like calling it "animated suspension."?

Some companies have announced hiring freezes, and others are more mindful about additional headcount, which could mean more competition if you consider moving internally and externally.?

Whatever the economy does, preparing for changes outside your control is essential. That's where I come in! I've got the insider insights you need to know right now - that no one is paying enough attention to them.

When the competition gets tough, every detail matters - that's where precise attention to your personal brand comes in.

A personal brand means being recognized for your unique self and skills and increasing your visibility, access to opportunities, and growth.

A positive personal brand is beneficial to both you and your organization. (HBR.ORG)

?? Here are a few things to consider that can help keep you from a layoff or advance you into a promotion should the internal landscape shift.?

?

? Make yourself indispensable by being present, especially important if you are remote. Turn those cameras on with a clean background, and show up professionally for every meeting to stay memorable.

Insider Tip: We've been working remotely for a few years now. Show initiative by using an office, not a blurred or virtual background.?

? Get involved with projects that drive business and innovation.?Get feedback from your manager and your peers, implementing ways you can improve.?

??? Differentiating yourself so you can be seen and needed for your efforts is paramount to building your brand.

? Find your champions. Find internal champions that support your role and career ambitions. Network with colleagues outside of your current team.?

? Keep your "atta girl file" updated. Note any quantifiable measurements of change so you can use them later to differentiate yourself from your peers. Savingany emails or messages where you are recognized or praised will help develop your brand story.

For example, You received congratulations on a massive project you completed. You can turn it into a story and use it when you advocate for a promotion or another project.

???Those stories translate well when you are interviewing and on your resume, if you can demonstrate how you made, saved, or achieved something meaningful.

? ABL? (Always Be Learning!) If we think about your career long term, consider what people skills or technical tools you can add to your current role that will help you advance later. Companies love seeing employees develop skills that directly impact the company's performance.??

This could mean certifications in programming languages, tools, or leadership training.

??? Remember all the new experiences you have learned during these last few years being remote.

For example: embracing change, dealing with ambiguity, and communicating are paramount.

? Networking and being seen outside of work. You may have heard me say you need to look as good online as you do offline. You need to consider boosting your social footprint, like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.?

These are platforms that you can capitalize on and increase your professional marketability. Being a known entity in your industry, community, and social sphere makes you more desirable to potential employers.?

??? As you dive into your industry's community, you will naturally be Networking, leading to vast connections that you would typically not encounter... which increases your likelihood of accelerating your career and makes you stand out from the crowd!
