Recent Post - When it comes to event security colleges can look to the pros.
I wanted to share the enclosed article as I think it is right on point in so many ways. I recently developed and posted a paper on the impact that both planned and unplanned campus events have on the college staff as well as the growing financial burden. As we all know, a lack of planning never lends a positive outcome when it comes to the unexpected.
Whether the campus is host to a planned or unplanned event, they depend heavily on the college’s public safety department to provide support for these events while also dealing with the normal day-to-day activities.
The article made reference to the Boston Marathon bombing. As I was the Senior Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police at Berklee College of Music at the time of this horrific event, I was there for the duration, arriving shortly after the second bombing.
As noted in many of the follow up article about the Boston Marathon Bombing, security an area of concern since the Olympics in Atlanta and although best practices had been discussed some were given a low priority. The lessons learned from the bombing continue to be tweaked by all major police departments. In today’s fast paced environment, colleges can no longer rely heavily on “campus staff” to address these types of issues. The campus needs to develop a specialized event management plan.
