Recently, the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute conducted a survey in more than 13 countries in collaboration with Ipsos. This survey asked 130,000 people, “What is your biggest priority?”, and in came the result: cost of living.?
The results, showcased at the Priority Summit in New York on the 22nd of September 2022,?were presented to leaders, policymakers, CEOs, Nobel Prize laureates, students, volunteers, academics, athletes, investors, and more. Held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, the summit provided a platform for discussion and dialogue aimed at finding solutions that will help leaders across the world address the number one priority for each segment of society.?
Richard Attias, CEO of the FII Institute, said in his opening remarks, “During the UNGA, everyone will discuss topics such as climate change, poverty, and education. All these topics are important and have been discussed for the past 20 years. But for the FII Priority summit, we thought about what our humanity needs-what does our?people?want?”
He added, “Nations and employers around the globe need to focus on the priorities of the people to provide social relief, increase job opportunities and security, and ensure social protection. This is what the FII is about – it is a call for action.”
The survey comes at a critical time, discussing the highest priority for each segment of society as the world goes through extraordinary social, economic and geopolitical changes.?
There is “little help for the middle classes who bear the cost of inflation,” said a 37 year old female in France; while a 74 year old in the U.S said there’s “high prices for everything like gas and food but no increase in money coming in for the family.”
The survey, thus, provides an important guide for policy and decision makers everywhere, revealing the priorities of people of all ages, nationalities, and socio-economic standing.?
From social to environmental to identity crises, people listed their fears and worries for the survey to rank. The social crisis, embodied in the rising costs of living, increasing social inequalities, and lack of social mobilities came first with a whooping 50 percent of responders saying it is their top priority.
A close second for 40 percent of responders was environmental crises, from climate change to loss of biodiversity to water, air and soil pollution. In third place, 10 percent of responders stated that their top worry was an identity crisis, linked to the difficulties of migrant integration, loss of traditional values and so on.?

After revealing the findings in the first session of the event, the panel discussions that followed aimed to answer critical questions of what new regulations and organizations need to be formed to realize each priority.?
With changemakers gathered in one room, discussions of how communities around the world can understand and support each other to achieve each priority flourished. Global political, economic, and cultural leaders were encouraged to focus on each priority to create a better world for everyone.?
The survey also had another interesting finding where 70% of people in high income countries were revealed to be pessimistic about the future while 70% of people in emerging countries were in fact optimistic about it.?
Thus, it could be concluded that optimism and GDP growth in the past 5 years are correlated—which indicated that world leaders can achieve progress and improve the outlook of their citizens by attending to their priorities.
The survey highlighted one specific pessimistic finding when it came to work, which is that?54 percent of citizens believed they are not able to save for their future.?
Calling it “the great resignation phenomena”, the Institute’s CEO Richard Attias said the survey found that 50 percent of employed citizens are willing to leave their current job in the near future.
This prompted Attias to call on CEOs to pay closer attention to work conditions, salaries and career development.?
