The murder of George Floyd while in the custody and under the control of the very officers legally endowed with badges, guns and the lawful authority to detain and subdue people was an atrocity. Police officers have such powers under the law in order to 'Serve & Protect' society. Abuse of these powers constitutes a crime, in itself.
The eulogies for George Floyd are all the comfort immediately available to those who knew him and will miss him. We owe it to them to listen and remember. However, these fond remembrances of Mr. Floyd should not be the focus for the rest of us. We shouldn't require any level of qualification for keeping one's life while under arrest with our hands cuffed behind our backs. Its beside the point.
Whether a beloved human being or not, whether a good human being or not, whether a nice human being or not, one very simple and basic fact remains. He was a Human Being. This nation is founded on one very simple and basic fact listed first among all others.
His Creator decided when he would take his first breath. No other person, facing no immediate threat and under the color of legal authority, has the right to determine when he and any of the rest of us shall take our last.
