Receiving Multiple Instructions? Is your boss your new mom?

Let me start by saying- I have nothing against any mom. I am a mom too. And this does resonate with me.

We are all used to our moms giving us multiple instructions. No matter how old we were, we were given a series of instructions, things to do and things not to do. Most of the times the instructions weren't even related to each other or weren't even instructions for one specific task.

Moms just give instructions. That's how we see them and we have to carry them out... no matter what.

Same with our bosses. They are a figure of authority and love giving instructions- what to do, how to do, when to do, what not to do.... is a part of their job role. and all their instructions have to be followed. And it doesn't end here...other seniors jump in too. Everyone

The following example elucidates this point.

Take employees to some new place/ room/conference room etc.

Blindfold one of the employees. Now ask others to give the blindfolded employee instructions. The blindfolded employee has to start from point A and has to reach point B. The other employees/coworkers will give him verbal directions that will help him reach his destination. The blindfolded guy is given a 360 turn. So he doesn’t really know what to do or where he is unless his coworkers tell him.

What happens is he that he hears so many voices. Some will say… walk straight.. no turn a bit.. no little left.. little turn.. take 2 steps.. every one will give their own instructions. The blindfolded employee will be totally confused.

Now do the same thing at the same place with just one guy giving him clear directions. The blindfolded guy will reach his destination in no time at all.

 Remove the blindfold.

This is to prove that this is classic case of multiple instructions that are given in an office.

When multiple people give different instructions or different directions to complete the task--- the subordinate/employee is bound to be confused.

So when the blindfolded guy received instructions from just one person it was easier for him to do the given task.

He knew which direction to follow and was guided by just one voice as opposed to many.

A note for all the bosses- yes give instructions, but not too many.
