Rebuilding Today's Economy Is Not Impossible

Decades ago, I worked in construction as a young teenager for two summers. I learned some really important lessons back then. One big takeaway was that the men who were older than me were always one serious accident away from not being able to provide for their families. The other was that their body would only tolerate the physical burden for so long.
Those two things engrained in me the importance of going to college to give myself options. While I am grateful for the path I took, I also know more needs to be done to create options for those who may not have the same access to the resources that can set them down a different path in life.
The kind of work we do and the kind of work we really want to do means the difference between simply earning a living and living life on your own terms.
More than ever, I think it is important for all of us to work on building a better economy, one that allows people to thrive on their own terms and provide for their families no matter the setbacks, man-made or natural.
Today, we face a big “impossible” in reopening our economy due to the lingering fear that a second wave of the virus is eminent but we can no longer ignore the threat that people face if they cannot work.
People need to work to provide for their families and fear must take a backseat to those pressing needs. Many people will also want more of a balance in their personal and work lives. Good companies will work with them to get there. In a perfect world, everyone who is willing to work should have a job that provides certainty about the future.
If you are running a business, maybe it is time to ensure that you are not looking at employees like a liability but rather as individuals who can help your business grow.
Whatever you do, just keep in mind that strength builds adversity. This is not a time to retreat in despair but to build something far better than what we had before.
The song recently released by Florida Georgia Line entitled, U.S. Stronger, makes me think this is all possible—here and around the world. It is up to us to make that choice and go forward.

4 年Good question, and great observations. I'll definitely give that some thought.

4 年Good observation, Luis! Often, it can be tricky for people to get out of their pre-defined roles and mindsets. "My parents were hard-workers and earned their little money to support the family", so " I am supposed to do the same and should reach out for ridiculous dreams". ??????. Isn't time to think big?

4 年Great stories of influence Luis R. Farias. I can only imagine the impact these had for you. Because I've had so many occupations, done so many things, lived in so many places, in all my years, I don't consider any one thing that has help shaped my career choices. I can see that many situations have helped mold me in ways that have led me to where I am now. And I love this about life. That what may appear to be irrelevant today, may hold huge significance in the future. Nothing should be discarded, as there is potential value in all experiences.
