Rebooting the CHAOSS Asia chapter

On March 7th, 2024, the Asian chapter of the CHAOSS project was rebooted, a.k.a. we're back in business ??

Before we go ahead, please be forewarned. I do not use GIFs sparingly.

What is CHAOSS?

CHAOSS is an acronym for Community Health Analytics in Open Source Software, an open-source project under The Linux Foundation

It's okay if you're still confused; keep reading.

What does the project do?

According to its website, the project creates metrics, metrics models, and software to better understand open source community health globally.

That doesn't sound...very technical.

On the contrary, there are more areas that you can get involved in because of the kind of work we do. Whether you're interested in UX Design, software development, data science, or technical writing - there's plenty of room for everybody!

Don't believe me? Check out our GitHub to see the wide variety of projects that we are currently working on.

Isn't open source global? Why is there a specific chapter for Asia?

After being in the open source community for nearly half a decade, I still find very few Asians who can actively and sustainably participate in the ecosystem, let alone talk about its health.

A lot of it boils down to the fact that few avenues exist that exclusively cater to the broad range of Asian time zones and cultures. This also means that not many conversations are being had about targeting problem areas specific to these communities within and outside the Asian open source ecosystem.

Not only does this necessitate creating spaces for such conversations, but it also involves actively tapping into the vibrant local tech ecosystems already in place. But it'd be absolutely foolish of me not to give credit where it is due. This initiative was inspired by a similar one for Africa spearheaded by Ruth Ikegah.

This was the intention behind the relaunch of the Asian chapter.

Who can join?

If you're an Asian looking to meaningfully participate in the open source ecosystem, irrespective of your background, please consider joining the #chaossasia channel on the CHAOSS Slack.

Are there any in-person meetups?

Not yet. However, we plan to hang out every other Thursday at 8 AM IST. You can join us by getting yourself a calendar invite here.

Oh, and if you're coming to FOSSASIA , we plan to have an AMA about the chapter and the CHAOSS project in general. Stay tuned to this space for more deets!

Hopefully, that helped set some context around this relaunch! If you've any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comment section ??
