Reason 3: Technology drivers shift and approaches that served us previously are no longer effective (4 of 12 Part Series)

We are now well onto exponential curves with technological developments. The rapid spread of AI capabilities is a topical illustration at all industry conferences. The winning technology business cases of a decade ago are ubiquitous and taken as "given". The technology implementation backlog includes investments that will be dates before fully deployed.

Amelia and Ethan had been at the forefront of harnessing technology to drive their respective companies. Both had thrived on change, from different perspectives and as time passed, they found themselves chasing the rapid transformation of business dynamics in the tech landscape and having those perspectives challenged.

Amelia, the CEO of a manufacturing company, had always taken pride in producing high-quality, reliable products. Her company had long been an industry leader in food products manufacturing, relying on tried-and-true methodologies and legacy information systems.

Ethan, on the other hand, was a leader within a tech platform company that had disrupted many industries. His company had mastered the art of enterprise connectivity and using data analytics to offer personalised customer experiences. He always strived to be a step ahead, navigating uncharted waters with innovation. He assumed that technological advancements would inherently benefit society and were always the astute business move.

Amelia and Ethan found themselves at an industry conference, where discussions revolved around how technology was transforming every aspect of business. They both recognised that many of the assumptions they'd held dear were no longer relevant.

Amelia, after years of swearing by her “Best Practice” manufacturing processes, was realising that embracing automation, IoT, and real-time data analytics could drastically improve her company's efficiency and product quality. The old assumption that the "tried and true" was the best no longer held true, and holding onto that view would most likely threaten their business viability.

Ethan was struck by the ethical conundrums of cyber-security and responsible AI. He had been so focused on the possibilities of technology that he had underestimated the societal concerns about privacy and fairness. He understood that, to maintain trust and reputation, his company needed to prioritise working with clients on ethical AI development, even if it meant slowing down a bit.? Something he would not have considered a decade ago.

Over the course of the conference, Amelia and Ethan started exchanging insights. Both leaders initially viewed old practices and new technology as mutually exclusive. They reflected and discussed that the fusion of traditional wisdom and technological innovation can be a powerful combination.

Amelia learned how to apply her wisdom to leverage new technologies, while Ethan recognised the significance of adhering to timeless principles and maintaining stability.

Amelia's manufacturing company adopted AI for predictive maintenance and improved efficiency, while Ethan's start-up introduced transparency and ethical AI practices, gaining the trust of more customers.

They wondered what might shift their view next.

As the technology shifts, what we hold to be true can also shift.

TO FORESEE AND ACT CONSTRUCTIVELY WHILE THERE IS FREEDOM TO ACT IS LEADERSHIP “Foresight is the “lead” that the leader has. Once leaders lose this lead and events start to force their hand, they are leaders in name only.” - Robert K. Greenleaf 1970
