Into the realm of boundless creativity: Highlights from the 48-Hour Virtual Production Filming Contest

The first ever 48-Hour Virtual Production Competition took place this past May. Organized by Japanese-based Asian Virtual Human of Association, the competition aimed to promote and cultivate a larger interest among young talent within the digital production industry, as well as foster a deeper collaboration between industry players and educational institutes.

Base FX, China’s top visual effects studio was honoured to be part if this competition which kicked off at 0800 hours local time on 27 May 2023. A total of 56 teams consisting of international and regional tertiary students, enthusiastically put their efforts forward in this first-of-its-kind production.

The competition was split into 2 categories: The first consisting of local contestants, and the second consisting of the international participants. The goal was to complete an original two- to five-minute-long short film (using virtual production techniques) within 48 hours.?Contestants were allowed to use typical digital content production projects as backdrops, virtual engines and real-time production as their core platforms and technical modules. The staging, storytelling and applying techniques from virtual production technology were the key components within the judging criteria. ?

Neil Xie, Vice President of Base Media led the judging committee within the local category, while Founder and CEO, Chris Bremble was one of the key panelists within the international category. In his address Chris expressed, “This virtual production competition offers great opportunities for those who are interested in film production in the future, and we are excited to see your performance here”.

By the end of the 48th hour mark, a total of 46 teams successfully submitted their work. Winners for the Best Visual Effects, Best Film and Best Creative within the local grouping category each walked away with a 6-month training program in Visual Effects and Animation at Base Camp – Base Media’s training and development arm in Beijing focused on nurturing up and coming industrial talent.

During the awards ceremony, Chris capped off by noting the significance and balance of disruptive technologies such as virtual production and its positive contributions towards the production of film and content globally.
