Is it really the WOMAN’S day?

We recently spoke to a woman professional about her career journey. She started off by saying her career is like most women’s in India. Graduation, marriage, job, maternity break, job again. On the surface that sounds normal. But as we dove deeper, the hidden nuances of her story made us really think about the value and purpose of a having a ‘women’s day’.

“I was offered a central government job straight out of college that I wasn’t allowed to take because the office was too far from home.”

"I wanted to pursue an MBA after my undergrad. Instead, I got married and moved from Bangalore to Chennai."

"Just as my career was taking off, I experienced a difficult pregnancy. My organisation’s policies didn’t allow the flexibility I needed during this period, and I had to quit."

Unfortunately, all of these nuances are also symbolic and stereotypical of a woman’s career in India. How much is in her or any other woman's control? The so-called ‘normal’ progression of a woman's career in India is riddled with assumptions and expectations that limit the autonomy and agency of women.

"I spent close to 2 years trying to find another role.

During one such interview, I had a heated argument with the Managing Director of the company, and told him I was capable of handling my affairs and was looking for roles based on merit. I was sure of being rejected for the role. Much to my surprise, the Managing Director called me within 3 hours and offered me the position."

Harini's journey prompts us to reflect on the interplay between individual choices and external influences.?While the symbolic and stereotypical nuances of a woman's career may seem daunting, there is hope in recognising the resilience and determination of women like Harini Krisshnan who strive to carve their own paths amidst the constraints imposed upon them.

And in highlighting her narrative, we aim not to dwell solely on the challenges women face, but to provoke thought and spark dialogue about the value and purpose of Women’s Day.
