But really, how do you WANT to feel?

But really, how do you WANT to feel?

My "day job" is a full time hospice and palliative medicine physician at a large teaching hospital. This career provides ongoing clarification for me on the importance of not taking life for granted and not wasting too much time and energy on things that don’t really matter in the whole of life- my work and life experiences have taught me to stay very aware of how I’m showing up and doing what I can to craft a life that is vibrant, authentic, joyful and connected.

I have struggled for years with people pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety, overwhelm, and chronic self-doubt. I’ve done a whole lot of inner work to discover more about myself and ways to overcome limiting beliefs and patterns and show up as my authentic self, sharing what I learn along the way and helping others uncover what is possible for their own lives. I'm especially connected to all the amazing women/moms working in medicine since I can completely relate and am walking the same road. I know we are all doing our best to be everything to everyone - which is admirable, but truly exhausting and unsustainable. I invite you to give yourself permission to matter, and affirm your own value and worth as a human, fully deserving of love and acceptance without needing to DO anything.

Self-trust can be so incredibly difficult for those of us socialized as women to develop, because of how we are raised and what we see around us everywhere. We have been conditioned to look OUTSIDE of ourselves to get approval from other people about our choices, decisions and whether or not we are doing enough. We often find our worth in what we do for others, what others think of us, how helpful we are to others, and how selfless we are— but this can cause us to feel disconnected and uncertain of our own feelings, opinions, and desires.

When we are disconnected from our feelings and what we desire, it plays out in our habits, behavioral patterns, goals, and results.

Our habits and patterns are deeply wired in our brains and help us save energy and reduce decision fatigue. But what if a lot of your habits aren’t actually helping you feel how you truly want to feel? If you’re like me, you may not really slow down to take any real time to think about your habits and whether or not they are serving you in your current season of life.

The good news is exciting thing at least for me is that our brains also have the amazing ability to change and to rewire. Certainly not quickly or easily like a switch we can flip, but if we are intentional and can commit to teeny tiny changes consistently, rinse and repeat over and over, then these small actions slowly become our default habits and patterns over time. When I did I found that many of them were not helpful. Getting up in the morning with my kids was a habit and led to me feeling stressed and overwhelmed right away in the morning. Going to bed late each night was contributing to needing to sleep longer, and neither of those two habits were helping me cultivate peace, connection, or joy. But the good news is, our brains CAN change and rewire over time, but we have to make small shifts and be consistent. So why not use this to our advantage to introduce actions and habits we actually WANT to be doing that help us feel the way we want to feel?

I want you to imagine what it would be like if you were able to prioritize trusting yourself and your desires MORE than thinking about what other people think about you and how you should live. What if you could stop second-guessing yourself and spinning out in cycles of overwhelm and stress? What feelings do you think that could create for you? Would you have more freedom and ease? Less pressure and stress?

Can you imagine what it would be like to feel confident in yourself and trust your dreams and desires on a deeper soul level? What do you think it would feel like and be like to have your own back, regardless of the situation or circumstance?

Please know that you absolutely deserve to feel how you want to feel and that you have more power to make that happen than you think.

When you start to truly FEEL better more of the time, you will absolutely show up differently and create different results for yourself and what the shape of your life looks like over time.

A little about me:

I'm Sarah Wittry, and I am a full-time practicing physician and life coach in Columbus, OH. I split my clinical time between palliative medicine & inpatient hospice care. I work with moms in medicine who want to learn how noticing, allowing, and processing ALL their emotions with a compassionate nervous system regulation lens can be their superpower, and how connecting with their soul and intuition will allow for a dynamic, expansive, and meaningful life with a deep sense of self-trust! I am also a wife and mom to 4 children. I've walked through infertility, foster care, adoption, IVF, and am always interested in evolving to become the most aligned expression of myself. I'm an expert in giving myself permission to connect more deeply to myself and to carve out consistent time for joy, rest, and connection without apology- because I have seen how much more I am able to show up for my family & my patients when I ensure I am prioritizing myself, my needs, and desires most.

Sarah Wittry these are powerful words and I love the agency I've experienced after reading your reminder that I have the power, by design, to experience what I actually desire to feel more of the time. Along with the rigorous practice of other intentional, mindful self-care behaviors, your words have been transformative for me and have helped me cope with the anxiety and depression in this season of my life. Thank you for your invaluable thought-leadership on this topic, Sarah Wittry. You're helping change women's lives--one nugget at a time--and, have, certainly helped change mine. Bless you for ALL that you do and for your consciousness while doing it. You help make the world a better place ??

Sarah Wittry I love this so much! Since your post, it's been a transformative refresh and reframe and is yet another fabulous reminder that we must use the imagination to call that thing (which does not currently exist) into being. You're a magician, Sarah! Thanks for reminding me where I'd misplaced my magic wand ????
