It really does take all kinds of minds, Neurodiversity week
Author: Gregor Alexander, Finance Director at SSE
Last year we held our first Neurodiversity Celebration Week. As it was such a success, I’m pleased to announce that this week, we’ll be doing it all again.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by providing people with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent.
We’ve got lots planned for the week, including sponsorship of the “It Takes All Kinds of Minds” ( ITAKOM ) conference, colleague stories, and internal webinars for SSE colleagues to join.
SSE have recently formed a partnership with Mindroom , a Scottish charity that supports, informs, and empowers both children and people with neurodivergent differences.
As mentioned earlier, Salvesen Mindroom are hosting a global conference this week, which we are headline sponsor for. Rosie MacRae , Head of Inclusion and Diversity, Kara Hannah , Head of Talent and Leadership Development and Martin Pibworth , Chief Operating Officer will be attending the conference in person, and I’ll be joining virtually.
I’m also delighted to say that those that shared their 'by colleague for colleague' stories with us in last year’s neurodiversity week, have also been invited.
Sponsoring ITAKOM’s sixth global conference offers the perfect opportunity to learn and share – helping us be industry leading in offering an inclusive workplace that embraces and welcomes diversity.
Rosie and Kara will be hosting a roundtable discussion with other organisations at the conference where they will work together to gather a collective employer view of:
As of early March 2023, 25% of SSE employees that have disclosed their disability data have selected that they have a neurodivergent condition, with 15-20% of the UK population having a neurological difference.
We have a variety of internal events and assets coming out throughout the week available for all SSE colleagues, all of which will be recorded and uploaded to the Disability, Neurodiversity and Chronic Health Hub for-inclusivity purposes. This is also where the week’s timetable will be.
If you're not an SSE colleague, you can still get involved in Neurodiversity Celebration Week events and learn more by clicking here.
