Is It Really Better To Assume The Worst In Business?

What type of person are you when you are making assumptions? Are you a positive assumer or are you a negative one?
Generally, I tend to believe that most people are negative assumers. They will not necessarily assume the worst, but they won’t assume the best.
Usually, if you are making “assumptions” about somebody, you are assuming that their motives are not pure, that they are there for the wrong reasons or that something about their background may or may not be true.
It’s commonplace in our culture to assume negative things. At least that’s how I think a lot of us think when we hear the word “assume”.
You never assume that someone looks like they will let you cut the line at the store. I don’t say never, but that’s not the standard and the norm.
Our assumptions are a product of our personality, of our natural disposition of who we are as human beings. They are based on our upbringing, they are influenced by what feelings we are having about that moment, that event or that person.
The point is to recognize the type of assumptions that you make and how those are influenced by your surroundings, your upbringing and by your attitude/emotional state at any given time.
That emotional state piece of it is a little asterisk because it’s very difficult to control. It’s very different, difficult to see ahead of time, but it also is fairly easy to recognize, especially if you are tilting toward the negative aspect of things.
However, the nice thing about assumptions and the key about it is that they can change. They don’t have to stay the same throughout our entire lifetime. They fundamentally change the experiences that we have.
As you are longer in business and you have had more experience with different levels of employees, number of employees and backgrounds of employees, hopefully you stop thinking that you can’t find any good people.
Once you start having those good experiences, you realize that there are some phenomenal exceptional people out there that you can hire and become part of your team.
Whether you are naturally more of a negative or a positive assumer, there are drawbacks to being either. Just because you are a positive assumer doesn’t mean everything’s roses and cherry trees.
There are drawbacks to being a positive assumer about all situations and all people. There’s a lot of blind trust that’s involved when you are a positive assumer. A positive assumer continues to assume that people that make a mistake are going to do better next time.
Being a positive assumer can often lead to getting taken advantage of by people that understand that about you. They recognize this in your personality, that you always assume the best and the positive, and they can take advantage of that a little bit.

Whether it be by those little white lies of why they were late to work that day, or why they didn’t get that project done.
Also, more often than not, if you are a positive assumer, there’s a lack of explanation going on.
You may not be entirely clear in your expectations or how to do something that you need done as the leader in your organization because you assume that they are there for the same reasons you are.
On the flip side, I think we all understand the drawbacks of being a negative assumer. It’s a complete distrust in people. You assume that they are not going to do it no matter how many times you tell them.
You assume that they are dumb and they are not going to be able to figure it out, which ultimately leads to a little bit of fear and just stopping believing people and trusting in people, which leads to micromanaging.
If you find yourself being a micromanager, this may be something to really self-analyze and ask yourself if you are a negative assumer. How is that influencing your relationships around you and how you lead your people?
So, are you a positive assumer or are you a negative assumer? Do you recognize certain areas where you are positive and maybe certain other areas where you are absolutely negative? Please do not hesitate to let me know in the comments.
What is causing that? Is that an experience that you can go back and point to without going into too much psycho-analysis?
Although if that’s something that you need, absolutely reach out for help and find the therapy that you may need to work through those issues. However, usually when we have those types of strong negative assumptions, it goes back to some experience that we lived.
