The Reality of Job Applications on LinkedIn: A Call for Change

LinkedIn has become a leading platform for job seekers and recruiters alike. But as someone who has witnessed and experienced the dynamics of job applications, I feel compelled to raise a few critical points about how the system is working — or rather, how it’s failing.

1. Thousands of Applications for One Job: What’s Going Wrong?

It’s not uncommon to see thousands of candidates applying for a single job post. On paper, this might seem like a sign of LinkedIn’s reach and effectiveness. But in reality, it creates chaos:

  • Qualified Candidates Get Overlooked: Many candidates who genuinely meet the criteria often don’t get selected because their applications are buried under a sea of irrelevant submissions.
  • Unqualified Applicants Flood the Pool: Too often, candidates who don’t meet the job requirements still apply, falsely indicating that they do. This wastes recruiters' time and drowns out the voices of qualified applicants.

Recruiters and LinkedIn must find a way to ensure that only relevant candidates apply. A stricter initial screening process could help.

2. The Automated Rejection Responses

As job seekers, many of us have received those automatic, generic rejection messages:

“After reviewing your profile, we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates.”

Let’s be honest — in most cases, it’s clear that profiles are never actually reviewed. These automated responses, while polite on the surface, feel dismissive and demoralizing. If recruiters genuinely took the time to evaluate profiles, they would understand the unique skills and experiences candidates bring to the table.

Suggestion: A more thoughtful and transparent process is needed. Even a single personalized line in the rejection message could show respect for the candidate’s effort and application.

3. Lack of Knowledge Among Some Recruiters

Another pressing issue is the apparent lack of understanding among some recruiters regarding professional certifications.

  • For instance, many recruiters are familiar with CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and prioritize it as the only valid certification for accounting and finance roles. However, certifications like CA (Chartered Accountant) and ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) are often equally suitable for the job but are overlooked simply because recruiters lack awareness about their value and credibility.
  • This lack of understanding results in the rejection of highly qualified candidates who could excel in the role.

Recruiters must educate themselves about the global significance of various certifications to ensure they’re identifying the best talent, rather than dismissing them due to unfamiliarity.

How Can We Improve?

Here are a few actionable steps to address these challenges:

  1. Implement Intelligent Screening: LinkedIn and recruiters should leverage smarter AI tools to filter out unqualified candidates at the application stage.
  2. Encourage Responsible Applications: Educate candidates on the importance of applying only if they meet the job requirements.
  3. Improve Communication: Recruiters should personalize rejection messages and offer brief feedback where possible.
  4. Enhance Recruiter Training: Companies should ensure their HR teams and recruiters are well-versed in the certifications, skills, and qualifications relevant to their industry.

A Call for Fairness and Respect

The job application process should be a fair and respectful exchange. Candidates invest significant time and effort to apply, and it’s only fair for recruiters to reciprocate with thoughtful evaluation and communication.

To recruiters, job platforms, and job seekers: let’s work together to make the hiring process more efficient, transparent, and humane.
