Reality Check – Heatwaves and Climate Change

Everyone enjoys the sun. I mean,?we do need it to survive.?However, we do love our outdoors, those ice-cold drinks, barbecues and water fights.

It’s an excuse to wear that floral dress or that fancy fedora but there’s one thing that not everyone can agree on–?heatwaves.

Heatwaves are regional and locally dependent,?a heatwave for us is a chilling morning for the Spanish or those in the Caribbean.?The UK government defines a heatwave for us at a maximum temperature of?28 degrees Celsius.

So what makes a heatwave? Without being too scientific, it’s where high atmospheric pressure is localised and sucked towards the ground, inevitably?compressing?the pressure even more and this?increases?the temperature.

Is climate change to blame or is this natural??Well, both.?Whilst our planet is warming and heat is expected in the summer because of the planet’s jet streams. It’s?common?for hot air to be pulled from northern Africa and the Iberian peninsula, however, what is not normal is a?double jet stream cascading over Europe following a weak and unhelpful southern jet stream to cool everything down.

Due to climate change, we are seeing an?increase?in these radical temperatures. Researchers predicted we’d reach 40 degrees Celsius heatwaves in 2050.?We’re 30 years too early.?There’s some good news to this, it’s predicted by the Met Office that these heatwaves will only happen roughly every 15 years.?If that’s good news.

However, heatwaves comparable to 1976’s are 30 times more likely to happen and that’s solely dependent on climate change. Time is thinning and every moment counts, a solution starts with you.

A quite different feature from the usual products and promotion, however this feels more appropriate.

ylo has dedicated more than 100 trees to be planted, part of a reforestation program in Peru, Senegal and now in Tanzania. The mission is obvious, as a connectivity company that wants clean energy for road users, sustainable full-fibre broadband, zero plastic packaging and wastage, we're on the forefront to support companies globally through our company forest.

This would never be possible without our consumers, it is thanks to you that our reforestation campaign is happening and we hope it continues to grow.
