Reality Capture for Facilities Management

Reality Capture for Facilities Management

Reality capture can open up a world of possibilities for anyone managing a facility. From the creation of highly accurate documents to training staff, there are so many uses for this technology.

Reality capture starts off with a camera or laser scanner, which is used to take images and scans of your facility until the whole facility is covered. Once this is complete, a point cloud can be registered, colourised, and meshed to create a fully functioning 3D model of the site as it was on the day of the capture. You can then use this scan for a multitude of facility management jobs.

Floor plans

First, you can use it to create dollhouse views and floor plans of your site, allowing you to easily assess current conditions with the detail provided by the model. These assets can then be used in multiple applications, including simple spatial planning.

Emergency planning and response

Utilising specialist software, you can add documents, notes, and labels to your model. It can be used to optimise emergency planning and response, labelling health and safety equipment and assets such as emergency exits, refuge points, panic buttons, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, first aid kits, emergency lighting and signage. You’ll be able to plan routes easily and make allowances for people with mobility issues. This allows you to look at the security elements including where your security cameras, movement detectors and testing systems are located.

Sharing up to date information

As you are working with a digital model, it can be shared and collaborated on easily, with all parties able to see the most up to date information at once. With the ability to add notes to each piece of equipment or system requiring replacement, repairs, upgrades or maintenance, and even being able to attach important documents, this makes it incredibly easy to work with a team for safety and maintenance purposes.

With high accuracy laser scanners, you’ll be able to take highly accurate measurements of the facility without needing to be on site, saving time and money.

Virtual Reality experience

The model can be made into a walkthrough or VR experience, perfect for use for showing new personnel around your facility, or for providing your customers or visitors with a virtual tour of the site.
