The Realisation that your Job does not Define You!

It took me a while or must I say quite a few of my early career years to realise that I am certainly not my job! And also to realise that it is not all that I do!
Society judges your worth by the job you have!
It is a disgusting fact staring right at us always. As a society, we want to know if the person is capable of paying bills and what he/she does for a job. The conversations also have some expressing an upper hand just so because they have a fancy lead position in a top company and the other is merely a team member. Sadly, the society boils down to judging our intelligence, education, status and income level with the job we hold.
We think we are our Job
On the other hand, we are so accustomed to the society around us that we think the job is the ultimate thing that drives our life. Be it owning the fancy materialistic things, the status that the society offers you, the social circles one can be a part of and just boosting one's ego with the respectable job that one holds. ( Here I am referring to higher the job position= higher the respect) There is some sort of a unruly fervour that 'I am powerful.' With each designation and climbing up the ladder we feel invincible and the race goes on and on.
We are beyond our designations
Lately, I am amused at the questions put forth by people while making a small talk or just about introducing themselves. It goes like..
"My name is ......."
"What do you do?"
"I am an Engineer!" or "I am a Doctor." or " I am a Financial Consultant."
Yes, you are thinking right! We define ourselves with our job title, ironically when a job just pays your bills at the end of the day and takes hardly one-third of your day.
Our identity is more so with our likes, dislikes, the passions that we have, the values that we live by, the purpose of our life, the qualities and capabilities that we hold and much much more.
So here is what I have,
- Your job pays your bills at the end of the day
- Your job may eventually change or you may lose it
- Your job takes up hardly one-third of your day
- Your job does not make you successful
Let's not be hell bent on working day and night with losing our health, family, friends and most importantly 'YOU' in the pretext of a JOB.
You are much more than your titles, designations, job, status! Life as I see it, is more about finding and getting to know yourself. There is a whole new world out there to explore and to cherish the wonderful experiences.
If you feel stuck in your job here are certain things that you can ask yourself to make a change in your job or your life. Suit yourself!
- What makes you happy? Is it reading a book, dancing, cycling.....
- What activities do you like doing when you are not working? Is it browsing, sketching, listening to music...
- What was your dream job? Was it to be an actor, director, pilot....
- What kind of people do you hang out with or whom can you have conversations with without any pretentions? People with common interests as yours.... Find your gang..
These above questions may give you an idea as to where your passions lie or what you want to do with your life if not the job you hold or maybe you can add these passions as your hobby along with the job you hold....
Explore, think beyond your job, you never know you may find your passion, your reason for being.
Trust me YOU are much much more than the job you hold and it surely does not define YOU!

8 年Wonderfully written, exploring all aspects of the topic. A job or job title is not US, but only a part of US. A job is not all our day is about, but only a part of it. It's high time we realise this and cherish this. Cheers.
