Real Talk: Don't nobody care about you being sick

Don’t nobody care about you being sick. I know that statement is not at all grammatically correct, but the fact is;  it is emphatically correct. No one really cares if you are sick. They still need you the same way they needed you before.

Put yourself in the shoes of your employer. When you were called for the interview, were you sick? No. You were probably jumping for joy, going on your social networks asking friends for prayer, claiming it in Jesus name. When you were hired, were you sick? No. You were counting your paper. Thinking about what you will do on payday and doing cartwheels around your house. When you signed the contract, were you sick? No, you were smiling ear to ear like a cheshire cat and glowing with pride at your accomplishment. Then six weeks into the job, you want to call in sick? Oh, you sick now? Well, baby girl, don’t nobody care about you being sick. Think about it. They hired you because they need you there. Yes, you are allotted sick time, personal days, vacation days and our favorite one...FMLA, yes...but that is not the point.

The point is; there was a position that needed to be filled and out of all the hundreds of applicants they chose you. Now, you are tired? Many people do not like to work. Many people feel like work is just a means to an end. They feel that it is just something that has to be done in order to get some bills paid. However, your work is more than that. It is your ministry. Also, Miss, you are a hot commodity. You are a young able bodied, sound minded, educated, warrior female. Please do not get sick. You cannot afford to. You have a family to take care of. You have customers, clients and kids that need your help. Truth is, you have power over your body. You can give your body the care that it needs in order to free it from every malady. Just listen to your spirit.

Avoid food that you have a bad feeling about.

Exercise daily.

Cut back on sugar.

You don't have to eat two servings.

Drink plenty of water to improve the function of your digestive system.

Keep your immune system strong with a positive mindset.

Seek God for guidance with combating stress in your everyday life.

Be well. Think well.

Maintain a warrior spirit.

Tap into the royalty within you.

I can count on one hand, (okay, maybe two) how many times I have been sick in the last 20 years. Imagine if you owned a corporation and decided to hire someone named Ms. J. You hired Ms. J due to her outstanding qualifications. Let’s say her salary is $60,000 plus benefits.

Then, let's say within eight months of her start date Ms. J gets sick three times and eventually you have to call in Ms. S.

Ms. S is from a temp agency and you have to pay her $500 per week until Ms. J is well enough to return to work. Soon, you become so nervous about Ms. J being out so much, even when she does return you keep Ms. S on as a floater just in case she is needed in the future. How would you feel? Would you feel "Aaw, poor Ms. J?" Be honest. Ms. J is screwing with your bottom line. Don't nobody care about her being sick. It is a cold hard fact.

Some of y’all know your primary care physician by his nickname. Not trying to jinx myself, but I do not even have a PCP. (Actually, I need to get one just in case. I may be sick right now and don’t even know it. LOL!) I know a lot of hypochondriacs that swear they are sick all the time, running back and forth to the doctor believing everything Doc says. The more they go to him, the sicker they get. The more meds he prescribes, the more they seem to need.

On a deeper level, it is true that some people, especially women, get attached to their doctors. He fulfills a void that they have in their private lives. He gives them the attention that they are lacking at home. Maybe you grew up without a father or maybe your husband or boyfriend does not look at you with the same intensity as Doc. Sweety, that man does not care a bit about you. You are just another patient, another dollar in his pocket. Get back to work and deal with your home issues at home.

But where are all my prediabetic, imbalanced hormone, precancer mutated chromosome carrying, chronic migraine sufferers? Congratulations! You get a day off. Actually, it is in your best interest to avoid getting sick at all cost OR find a good treatment fast. Seriously, the people hired you because they need you there. Find your passion! Make love, if you can. Exercise, eat right, take a B12 vitamin, drink lots of water and go to bed by nine oclock. You’ll feel much better. I promise.

Common sense: If you are contagious, yes, it is serious enough to stay home, but it does not take very long for those types of illnesses to get through your system, IF you are dealing with it, battling it they way you should. This is not time to turn into a baby. People need you. The world needs you. Get well.

Do you realize how many people are out there praying for the position you have? Do you realize the reputation you are building at the workplace as you sit at home letting your work pile up? Instead of claiming it by saying, “ I have a cold” say “It is just a cold.” If you have the cold, the cold will have you. Use mind power over that demon. There are many sicknesses in this world, but you will have victory over each and every one. Believe that deep in your heart. As Dr. Jinneh Dyson says: “Think up.”(When you get a minute, go to https://jinnehdyson.com. She is amazing!) Trust me.

Question:What is the number one way to impress your boss?

Answer: Be there. SHOW UP. Come to work every time you're scheduled to do so.

In the education world, around October/November many teachers use FMLA. They go on bed rest with high blood pressure brought on by work anxiety. Imagine that; Some little twelve year old made your blood pressure rise. Could that not be anticipated? Let me put in for my time off right now, because I can already tell you them jokers are going to work my last nerve this school year. They always do. I have a famous saying "I got one nerve left and you dancing on it!"

Actually, I go to the OBGYN every year and each time they tell me my blood pressure is a little high. Mercy me, however, I peel my butt out that bed and I go to work the next day. Some women work up until they are nine months pregnant. They are tired, gassy, grumpy and hungry, but they power through it to complete their goal. I was lucky that my boss felt sorry for me, because I was out for three months when I had my child, and back then I really did not care what it would do to my career. It is best practice, though to be dependable. You were hired because they felt that they could depend on you. One of my former Principal’s favorite teachers was Ms. K. She was not the best teacher in the world. She was considered average as far as teaching excellence goes, but he loved her due to one thing: her consistency. She showed up and not only did she show up, she arrived to work 30 minutes early every day! Every single day she was ahead of time, ready and willing to get the job done. Years later, she is still remembered and admired for that one thing. It matters a lot. When promotions are being passed out, she will be at the top of the list. She has a great work ethic.

So I am encouraging you today: Place your work ethic above your need for a little more sleep. Place your work ethic above your need for a mental break or your coveted “me time”. A successful career and high reputation will do more for you than a day of slumber ever will.

Furthermore, I encourage you: REMAIN on your throne. BE the best that you dare to be. I know it is hard, nevertheless, we must fight on. Believe me, your rest will come in due season.
