Three Non-negotiables?for the Future of Work
Vistage members are fortunate to have access to experts in many fields. One of the most important questions facing our members is the future of talent management. One of our most valuable experts on the workplace is Dr. Gustavo Grodnitzky who has been Vistage’s premier thought leader on dynamics of different generations in the workplace and by extension what the future workplace will look like.
A recent article by Grodnitzky (available to non-members as well) explores several key factors that C-Level leaders must understand to have an effective workforce. Check out the “3 Tenets Leaders Need to Understand About the Future of Work.” ?
If you benefit from reading the article, please be my guest for Gustavo’s April 26 webinar, The Future of Work: Navigating Culture and Workforce Trends in 2024 .

"Real Skills" are Not Soft
Seth Godin notes that “What actually separates thriving organizations from struggling ones are the difficult-to-measure attitudes, processes and perceptions of the people who do the work….The foundation of all real skills is this one: the confidence and permission to talk to one another.”
Godin’s concise and compelling commentary warns “We persist in hiring and training as if we’re running a bowling squad, as if easily measured skills were all that matter.” Read his thoughts on why soft skills are the real skills.
Great Obnoxious HR Questions
Vistage speaker and HR Expert Hunter Lott recently suggest that there are 5 questions that will save you a lot of time and trouble in hiring.
Check out his recent “Take 5 with Hunter Lott” video for the right answers to the following Critical Questions (some of which he admits may be received as obnoxious).

Guilty as Charged?
The late Peter Drucker once remarked that the essence of people management strategy was to “leverage their strengths and make their weaknesses irrelevant.” Simon Sinek, who shot to fame with his book and TED Talk Start with Why, adds an interesting tactic that aligns with this strategy. Find out if you’re “guilty as charged” with this common leadership mistake .

All of us, whether in management or not have some dependence on real estate, whether a home we own, apartment we rent, commercial or retail properties that our businesses use.

In a seller’s market for talent and labor, compensation and benefits are key. Salaries, wages, health care, retirement, vacation help attract and keep great employees. How about a benefit that will help employees protect themselves, their families, and assets? (And it’s free).
Vistage IT Security Speaker and IT Security Expert Mike Foster, CISA, CISSP usually focuses on helping us keep on members’ businesses IT assets secure. But in a recent post he offers a terrific list that you might share with every employee that help them protect themselves in the event of a major data breach. None of them require technical skills and most are free.?
Even with all the recent data breaches, many of your employees may not be taking some of the basic, inexpensive precautions that could help them protect their financial interests. You invest a lot to keep you employees safe digitally and otherwise at work. Help them be as safe at home by sharing Mr. Foster’s brief but helpful post.? ?

?A Tale of Two Trends:? ITR Economics’ Brian Beaulieu looks at recent data and sees a “tale of two trends.” Some metrics are quite good, others alarming. Check out the story in his most recent FedWatch Video .
The Fed’s Preferred Tool: Inflation news usually features the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as the measure of inflation. However, the government body most involved with fighting inflation, the Fed, prefers a different measure that, if you closely watch price level changes, you should know more about. 7 个月? Sue Tinnish, PhD Thank you for bringing these excellent resources to mi attention. Seth Godin’s refreshing look at soft skills resonates with me as it’s an area I never understood why it was so undervalued. Language and naming matter in business, especially in the case of the term, “soft” for intangible, nuanced leadership, human and heart-based skills that are often dismissed in a highly analytical-skills-biased workplace.

7 个月? Sue Tinnish, PhD - interesting topics and I fused them together in the context of the Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma" that I watched for the first time last night. Specifically - Soft Skills are definitely the most important and hardest to train; with many people glued to screens much of their time, having skills to maintain productive human interaction is critical and harder because people are not "practicing" by doing it as much as we used to pre-screen-suck. Then I watched Marc Emmer's Real Estate video and how he described the future of customized webfront pages based on customer's age, demographics, industry, etc., and I thought - This is *exactly* what the algoritm-based feeds are already doing in social media. That led me to wonder more about what the connected future will look like - does it mean we are now more readily using AI in all areas of life to diminish the social interactivity (i.e. I will get the personalized info that I need from every website, so I don't need to call a human, so I talk with other humans less, so I eventually become worse at interacting with humans) - and is that good or bad? Stopping here - that is a lot for a Monday morning, still interesting to contemplate as we move forward.

7 个月Two question stood out on the #hiringquestions ? Sue Tinnish, PhD 1 - What does success look like - when I am coaching folks and they are offered a promotion or a new job- I ask this one. Many times females are offered a not-too-desirable role that is disguised as a great opp. Having eyes wide open and doing the due diligence is always worth it. Knowing the magnitude of the change needed to drive to the success also helps you negotiate for resources and rewards. 2 Would you re-hire - Markets and business move-has the teammate also grown accordingly? Sometimes I made a hiring mistake - an EDS leadership adage was - Don't perpetuate a bad decision (yours or someone else's!)
