The real reason you can’t finish your own web site

Why is it so hard for creative professionals to get their own web site done?
That’s a rhetorical question, actually, because I do have a few ideas about why this is such a big challenge.
For example, I know you can write and/or design a client’s web site without any problem. But, for some reason, you just can’t do your own, right?
I suspect the real reason is this: because you (we all) need distance — and when you’re doing it for your client, that’s exactly what you have.
But when it’s for yourself, that’s exactly what you don’t have.
That’s why Jill Anderson, of JillLynnDesign.com, has successfully positioned herself as the designer’s web designer…most designers just can’t do it themselves, (even if on paper you should be able to!)
And that’s why her latest free report addresses this issue head on!
In the “free report,” Get Your Website Done: 12 Actionable Steps for Designers, she outlines her simple process:
- Pick your niche
- Define your services
- Determine your competitors
- List your pages
- Don’t get hung up
- Choose your call to action
- Write all of the content
- Get photos taken
- Prepare your portfolio
- Take inspiration & design
- Code
- Launch your site
If you were her client, this is the process she would walk you through. But if you’re not, you can do it yourself! Either way, you win!

8 年This so resonates! I can easily put together a beautiful and functional site for my clients but when I update my own site, I'm too close to "my baby" and it becomes more difficult. I have to remind myself to step back and get to essence (the same way I ask my clients to!). In part, it also has to do with the fact that because I can do it all myself, I have more flexibility and going back in for updates. Like Chris said, "I don't think my website will ever be 'finished'"
I update mariocaiti.com* sometimes. It's current minimalist look has been up for a few years, and I'm working on a redesign, but I really want to show off my CSS (and SCSS/Sass), UI and Javascript skill and ingenuity. It takes time, which I don't have because unfulfilling day job + 20 other projects. *hint hint visit hint hint
