The Real Reason Most Recruiting Agencies Aren't Using AI for Hiring

?? Welcome back to Never Job Search Alone. This week we're sharing Boly:Welch's take on using AI to screen resumes.

Does Boly:Welch uses artificial intelligence (AI) to screen resumes?

The short answer? No we do not!

Here’s why we don’t (and why we think fewer companies are doing so than you might expect):

The truth is, even the most modern applicant tracking systems (ATS) are pretty old-fashioned.?Despite the rise of AI technology, the ATS is still just a database that is used to track candidate information.

While some companies might brand certain ATS features as "AI," the reality is they're typically no "smarter" than a search engine. In fact, we've done some of our own research and have found that many vendors selling AI services for hiring are simply offering AI chatbots.?

This isn't actually an effective method for streamlining the hiring process. It can slow things down, and for most small to mid-size businesses, it's not a cost effective strategy. Realistically, resumes are extremely subjective documents, and any recruiter with much experience in the field will know that — whether the resume was written by the job seeker themselves, a career coach, or ChatGPT — it's only part of the story.

Even if a company were using an AI screening tool to vet resumes, it's still up to a human being to decide whom to interview (and hire).??

Your priority in submitting a resume should not be tricking AI with keywords; rather, your focus should be on effectively communicating the skills that are relevant to the job you're applying for.?Make sure to communicate that you not only have the experience and qualifications that an employer is looking for, but that you're intentionally looking to use those skills specifically.???

At the end of the day, it's not AI taking you through the interview and hiring process — it's a real person. Don't lose sight of the human element.
