The Real Problem with Open RAN

The Parable of the CTO, a Wall and a Ferocious Dog

Once upon a time there was a CTO who was walking along a path. They came upon a wall with a ferocious dog in front. As they paused a voice from above called down.

"You need to climb the wall"

The CTO looked at the wall, it looked rather daunting but possible to do. The CTO looked to the skies and replied

"Why do I need to climb this wall?"

"Because this is what your industry needs to secure the future!" the voice replied, "you will be less dependant on others, you will find you can do more, you will be in control of your own destiny!".

The CTO stopped walking and considered what the voice had told him. He asked the voice many questions and the voice answered them confidently, with facts, proof and conviction.

"You will not be the first to climb the wall but you shall be one of the first of many!" says the voice, as the CTO considers the risks in climbing such an imposing barricade.

"I have more questions!" called the CTO skywards.

"This wall is very imposing and challenging. If I manage to successfully scale this wall and climb to the other side, what rewards await me?"

The voice confidently said "You will be able to keep your job and continue in your career as before" replied the voice.

"And what if I fail in getting to the top of the wall and fall back down?"

"Then the ferocious guard dog will savage you to death"

The CTO looked at the guard dog and the guard dog looked back at the CTO, the dog's eyes seemingly burning into the back of his skull. This did not feel the dog's first rodeo, it felt like the dog had savaged many before him that had taken other risks, and this was just the latest wall he was guarding.

The CTO looked at the wall once more, then looked at the dog. The CTO was not afraid of a challenge but was afraid of the dog.

"Do I have to climb the wall?" the CTO asked

"Absolutely not" replied the voice, "You can continue to walk past both the wall and the dog as if neither existed, and carry on doing what you were already doing before".

"You will be able to keep your job and continue in your career as before" the voice added.

What would you do?

Ran across this when you published it, still resonates.

As an individual who chooses not to follow the beaten path, a person driven by curiosity, with a desire to grow and acquire knowledge, I am unafraid of failure. I understand that each stumble provides a lesson on how to avoid falling the next time. In essence, I am prepared to scale any wall that stands in my way.
