The Real Problem Facing Companies Today

The Real Problem Facing Companies Today

As a business leader, what are you most worried about today??

The lingering effects of the pandemic and related lockdowns, business closings, vaccine mandates??

Inflation?

The war in Ukraine and/or Chinese balloons?

Supply chain problems?

The Red State/Blue State divide and what it means for the country?

All of those issues, and many others, are causing stress to business leaders across the country. However, in my view, the most pressing problem is the changes that are affecting our businesses and economy-and the increasing rate at which those changes are coming.?

I also believe that our business leaders are not the problem. BUT how they respond to these changes and the rate they are happening may become an entirely separate problem.?

Most People Choose Fight, Flight or Drop

I’m sure you remember being taught in high school humans’ instinctive evolutionary response to a perceived threat-fight, flight or drop. Well, I see that among some business leaders today faced with unwelcome change and the rate at which it is happening.?

But is there a better response leaders can make when presented with today’s problems?

Pause, Notice, Choose

Rather than let an instinctive response to a crisis du jour guide your decision, I suggest you pause before you make a response or decision you may later regret. Remember, there is always some time or space between when a problem arises and you have to respond.?

Take that time to examine the problem or issue in depth. In other words, take notice of it and decide the extent to which it can harm your company (or, upon reflection, maybe it won’t be so bad).?

Then choose a measured and appropriate response or action. Don’t make a bad situation worse. Respond in a way that is best for you and the company.?

Using this method, you’ll avoid the cortisol rush, the heart palpitations and the sweaty brow that stress often causes.?

And you’ll have a better night’s sleep that night.?
