Because you are NOT your buyers.

Your problems are not their problems. Your thoughts are not their thoughts. Your words are not their words. Your buyers speak the language of other buyers better than you do.

Find out what buyers are saying about you, then use their words in your marketing.

It's a process I call The Voice of The Buyer Method.

And it's the foundation of all I do as a copywriter and marketing advisor.

2) Show more of your Real self in your marketing.

It's no coincidence that many of the most valuable businesses on earth have a human face. When you think Virgin, Apple, Microsoft or Amazon ... you think Branson, Jobs, Gates and Bezos.

For the rest of us, simply sending a personal video to clients or sharing bits of your personal life on your website's About page are a starting point. Or you can go all out, like Doc did with that envelope.

Example: My real self includes a lifelong interest in languages. I’ve studied German, Biblical Greek, Irish, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. (Biblical Greek is hardest. Irish is funnest.) This helps me speak the language of any market, because I've learned new languages all my life. Clients like that.

3) Make real, tangible touches.

That means in-person visits, FedEx, or direct mail -- like Doc's letter to me.

Yes, digital marketing is here to stay, but your Instagram account can be cancelled tomorrow. Google and Facebook can ban your ads. Your emails can be blocked as spam.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Government will never let the U.S. Postal Service fail in our lifetimes. So be sure to include direct mail in your toolbox of real, tangible touches.

Bottom line: Real Marketing can help your business thrive in a digital world.
