Real Man Myths Are Misleading. Here's Why.

Real Man Myths Are Misleading. Here's Why.

For a long time, masculinity has long been defined by a set of stereotypical 'Real Man Myths'. These myths are not only misleading but can also be harmful, feeding into a culture that stigmatises men for displaying emotions, admitting failure, or seeking help.

In my book, Time to Talk: How Men Think About Love, Belonging, and Connection, we delve into these myths and offer a more authentic and healthy understanding of what it means to be a man.

Real Men Don't Doubt Themselves

Self-doubt, contrary to this myth, isn't a sign of weakness but an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. By recognising your limitations, you provide a starting point for self-improvement, fostering greater self-awareness. Embrace your doubts, question your assumptions, and use them as stepping stones towards becoming the best version of yourself.

Real Men Are Fearless Go-Getters

Being fearless isn't the same as being courageous. Courage involves acknowledging your fears and choosing to move forward despite them. When we understand our fears, we can grasp our values and motivators better, allowing them to guide our decisions effectively. So, here's to fearless go-getters, where fear is the catalyst for courageous action, not its nemesis.

Real Men Don't Cry

Let's set the record straight: emotional expression is not a sign of weakness. It's perfectly healthy and human to express your emotions, including sadness. Suppressing feelings can lead to increased stress and mental health issues. By accepting and articulating our emotions, we can foster greater emotional intelligence and resilience.

Real Men Have No Worries About Their Bodies

The societal expectations often lead men to grapple with body image issues silently. It's okay, even normal, to have concerns about one's physical appearance. However, it's important to foster a positive relationship with your body, prioritising health and acceptance over unrealistic ideals. Celebrate your body for its strength, capabilities, and for being uniquely yours.

Real Men Never Fail

Failure is not a measure of your worth but a stepping stone towards success. Every setback offers valuable lessons for growth and improvement. In Time to Talk we urge readers to redefine failure as an integral part of life's journey and a catalyst for personal development.

Real Men Are Lone Wolves

Lastly, the myth of the lone wolf neglects the importance of social connections and support networks for our emotional well-being. Isolation is often the breeding ground for a myriad of mental health issues. Cultivating healthy, supportive relationships contribute to a sense of belonging, improved mental health, and a more fulfilled life.

Let's challenge these 'Real Man Myths' and pave the way for a healthier, more authentic understanding of masculinity. The path towards emotional wellness and connection isn't about fitting into a stereotypical mould, but about being unapologetically ourselves.

Together, let's rewrite the narrative for men.
