Real Life Customer Stories from our Delphix Implementations
There are so many of Use Cases Delphix is involved with, bringing security, agility, protection, Self Service capabilities and more to the enterprises all around the world but it is always more impressive when we talk about real life scenarios where Delphix shines with what it brings to the table and people see it in action.
In this article I will share some of the Use Cases that we have achieved in some of our customers.
(1) Dedicated UAT/Preprod databases for Projects
When we talk about User Acceptance Test (UAT) and Preprod systems they are generally the systems that require full clone of Production databases, where teams need to test products throughly before they go into Production. Based on the infrastructure and operational shortcomings many enterprise customers can afford only few of such environments available for multiple projects, resulting in many of teams and projects sharing a common environment and affecting each other's data during the UAT phase.
With Delphix, it is actually a possibility that each of these projects can have their own UAT systems, dedicated only to that project. This happens without any storage requirements and cloning operation for that database system will take only minutes instead of days or weeks as we observe happening with enterprises that have not yet started using Delphix.
And we just did that in this specific insurance customer. Actually they do it themselves. They have been using Delphix for a long time and as can be seen in above presentation they are very comfortable giving out multiple clones from their Production to each team and project that requires access to high quality data. As it can be seen in the picture there are more than 400TB worth of virtual databases (only using around 20TB storage in Delphix) being served for different requirements, being used by different teams and this is only one example of the many databases that are being served in this customer with Delphix in similar fashion.
Of course most environments are complex and involve integration with middleware and other systems, but by simplifying and accelerating the data layer, providing a ubiquitous API layer that is the same for all data types and giving the best minds access to the data they need then companies can really start to make their environment management so much simpler and so much more productive.
(2) Provide BugFix Environments
Production databases are the most crucial systems that we manage today and this is same for whether it is a small organization or a big enterprise. Any bugs that are discovered in Production systems must be dealt swiftly and precisely. That's why in some of our customers we observe that developers are given temporary and urgent access to Production systems to analyze and solve any bugs that resolve. This is not a desired solution but the urgency of having a bug in a Production system can sometimes weighs heavily than the security policies that are in place, such as "no developer access to Production systems".
However over the time the exception becomes a rule and we find ourselves in an undesirable situation where there are multiple developer accounts in Production systems accumulated over time.
Delphix can easily provide a soltuion around that by creating as many Production clones for any database for any developer. This provides us a perfect solution: The developer team can access Production data that is not on the Production system, can analyze and provide the solution for the specific bug and test the solution throughly with Production data without any impact on Production systems itself.
This is commonly referred to these days as Site Reliability Engineering and focused on speeding the Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR)

This was exactly what we have done with one of our customers. Upon investigation we have found out that there are more 200 developer accounts given Production access over time. Even tough these accounts were temporary when they were first created over time the exception became a rule and number of developer accounts increased.
With Delphix, we have provided multiple BugFix clones that are refreshed regularly with the latest data from Production and given to specific developers based on the requirements. All the developer accounts are deleted from Production systems and the customer was very happy becoming compliant to their security policies.
We have taken this approach a step further with another customer and were able to provide an end-to-end solution, where Delphix is integrated with their Jira. In this example, Jira detects that a bug is opened in Bugzilla, then calls and asks Delphix to create a virtual database specific to that bug. This happens in only minutes and without any storage requirements. Whats more, Jira then updates the Bug information and supplies it with the virtual database information. When the bug is analyzed, tested and fixed, Jira detects bug is closed and calls and asks Delphix to delete that specific virtual database.
(3) Deliver Integrated Environments In Minutes
Delivering one database in minutes without using any storage is great but delivering multiple end-to-end connected environments is even better. This might be a critical improvement for the customers who would need end-to-end integrated environments that provides Production like test capabilities (specially to test whole customer lifecycle, starting from one system and continuing in other systems). Our observation coming from experience is that most enterprise customers require end-to-end integrated systems specifically for UAT, Prelive and similar cases that they can test their development outputs in a real life scenario. However maintaining these systems with high quality Production like data can be quite costly considering all the operations and infrastructure required.
Delphix shines in scenarios such as this, simply because it's quite possible and very easy to create such environments using it's unique virtualization and Self Service capabilities. It is possible to refresh whole environments (databases and applications) with the latest Production data with with Delphix in matter of minutes instead of spending days or weeks or even months trying to refresh these environments with traditional methods.
This is what we have done with one of Telco customers, providing multiple clones of their Production systems and integrating these systems with their relative applications and with each other. There are both standalone and integrated clones of their Production databases available for the teams at their fingertips.
These are just a couple of real life scenarios where our customers continously gain from using Delphix. There are many more user stories and customer scnearios and use cases where we provide value every day.
