Welcome back to our LinkedIn newsletter series on John Addison's Real Leadership! Today, we explore the sixth principle: "Develop a Peaceful Core." The world is always going to be a messed-up place. All kinds of things can go wrong. We can’t control that. But what we can control is whether or not there is chaos on the inside. In the fast-paced, often chaotic world of leadership, maintaining inner peace can be a game-changer. A peaceful core helps us navigate challenges with clarity, make better decisions, and inspire confidence in the team. Let's delve into how we can cultivate inner peace and why it's essential for effective leadership. ????♂?
The Importance of a Peaceful Core
Leadership often involves high-pressure situations, making it easy to become overwhelmed. To achieve anything of substance, we have to reach a point where we carry a sense of peace at our core. Developing a peaceful core is about creating a sense of inner calm and stability that allows us to remain composed, no matter what comes our way. This inner peace is not about avoiding challenges but about handling them with grace and resilience. David Grayson, an American writer, journalist, and historian is credited for discovering the value of developing a Peaceful Core.
"Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means." ?– Ronald Reagan
Strategies for Developing a Peaceful Core
1. Mindfulness and Meditation
The natural state of an untended mind is negative. The peaceful core doesn’t maintain itself. It takes vigilance and constant effort to stay positive. Most crises, calamities, and disasters are just situations and not problems. The question is how do we respond? If we want to keep our minds focused on the positive, we must remove all the doubts, worries, criticism, and frustrations. Incorporating mindfulness and meditation into our daily routine can significantly enhance our inner peace. Taking just a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness can help us stay grounded and focused. For example, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, practices daily meditation to maintain his composure and clarity amidst the demands of his role. ??♀?
2. Regular Exercise
We all know that physical activity is a powerful way to reduce stress and promote mental well-being. Leaders like Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, emphasize the importance of regular exercise. Branson credits his fitness routine with keeping him energetic and focused, enabling him to handle business challenges effectively. ??♂?

3. Setting Boundaries
Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial for maintaining inner peace. We need to make time for hobbies, family, and relaxation. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, advocates for "turning off" work at a certain time each day to recharge and maintain balance. Setting such boundaries can prevent burnout and keep us centered. ????
4. Positive Relationships
Surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people helps. Building strong, healthy relationships can provide a sense of security and peace. Leaders who nurture positive relationships within their teams often create a more harmonious and productive work environment. Real leaders are quick to forgive and even quicker to apologize. We have to get rid of a lot of the baggage we are holding on to if we want to be able to go very far. ????
5. Gratitude Practice
Practicing gratitude can shift our focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. Keeping a gratitude journal or simply taking a moment each day to reflect on what we are thankful for can enhance our sense of well-being. Oprah Winfrey, a strong proponent of gratitude, often speaks about how this practice has helped her maintain inner peace and happiness. ????
Consider the leadership style of Nelson Mandela, who led South Africa out of apartheid and into a new era of reconciliation and unity. Mandela's inner peace was evident in his ability to forgive his former oppressors and his commitment to a peaceful transition. Despite spending 27 years in prison, he emerged calm and composed, ready to lead his nation with compassion and wisdom. Mandela's peaceful core allowed him to inspire trust and hope in his people, guiding South Africa towards a brighter future. ????
Let us appreciate that developing a peaceful core is essential for effective leadership. we can cultivate inner peace by incorporating mindfulness, regular exercise, setting boundaries, Letting go, fostering positive relationships, and practicing gratitude. This peaceful core enables us to navigate challenges with clarity and resilience, ultimately inspiring confidence and trust in the team. Remember, true leadership starts from within. Embrace the journey towards a more peaceful, balanced, and effective leadership style. ????
