It’s long been recognized that superstition plays a significant role in the real estate game. Just hop into any elevator in a US high-rise building and look for the 13th floor. Hard to find, isn’t it? Travel to other countries and although the numbers themselves might change you’ll find the same trend. For example, China. Forget the number 4, pronounced “si” which is synonymous with death.
Of course, the opposite is also true. Numbers long considered lucky are not only prevalently featured in certain locales, but also influence sale prices and closing dates. Take the case of the Chinese developer who recently purchased a Sydney office building for A$88,888,888 (the number 8, which is pronounced “ba” and is similar to the word “fa” which means prosperous, is considered quite lucky). Or Israeli buyers who insist on signing property contracts on the 18th day of each month (in Jewish culture, the number 18 is associated with “chai” which is a Hebrew word meaning “alive/life”). Or the preference for the number 7 (representing the seven days of creation) by Russian buyers.
