Real Estate 3D Virtual Tours - are the photos it supplies comparable to a DSLR?
I believe that tools need to provide value to the end user, I also believe in quality. Technology has provided a rash of 3D camera's and more importantly platforms with the computing power and software to render the 3D models. Like most tools the camera's are not all created equal but that does not really matter if they produce what a client wants at a price point that they are willing to pay for.
I have always skirted 3D virtual tours, I am a photographer first and 3D camera's are designed for a specific purpose in mind (keep in mind that some like the iGuide use a DSLR and are not a special class of camera). I do a lot of photography for realtors who use 3D virtual tours and in my experience Realtors are prudent business people who tend to spend money on areas in which they derive benefit.
During Covid 19, virtual tours have taken on new significance in real estate. I recently acquired the latest Matterport Pro 2 to support my clients. The Pro 2 is an expensive piece of equipment in comparison to some of the 3D camera's being sold and I was worried that I would not be able to achieve cost savings for my clients if I did the 3D tour and a photoshoot for clients so I did a comparison. The results and some observations can be viewed here.
