The 'real' definition of social mobility

It seems that everyday in the media we hear about social mobility and all the issues that surround it but for me most seem to miss the real essence of what is social mobility. You read a lot about how deprived or underprivileged young people should be given more opportunities to gain access to the best universities. This is fantastic for the more academically gifted, however I don't think that is the be all and end all of what social mobility really is about. In my book it's about an individual developing themselves to achieve the ambitions and aspirations to the very best that there ability will allow.
Firstly it's important that an individual has there eyes wide open to the potential routes and pathways they can follow along with the exposure to what end goals could be achieved. Having access to role models and mentors can help put a dose of realism into the equation as well as drive imagination. Engaging with parents is also important, most, if not all, parents will take pride in seeing there children achieve progression along whatever path they take.
Literacy and numeracy are essential skills along with the right attitude, and education is vital in everyone's development in all stages of a career, however it isn't always necessary or appropriate for formal classroom learning. The university of life can provide the savvy which no Oxford or Cambridge can ever do.
Whilst I will argue my point regarding the necessity of the finest teaching establishment as always being the silver bullet to ensure social mobility, one thing that can't be challenged is the promotion and encouragement to support all individuals who strive for something better.
