Real Communication, Real Problems, Real Solutions: Highlights from #YouthBoostHB ????

This week’s #YouthBoostHB session was one for the books! ?? I’d been teasing the team all morning about a surprise-filled, fun, and informative session. From the start, there was a buzz of excitement, and as we kicked off, the energy in the room was contagious—everyone was eager to find out what was coming. ?

But did the session live up to the hype? Absolutely. In fact, it might have exceeded it! ??

The Unexpected Start: What’s the Topic?

We began with a powerful video on teamwork—how one person stepping up can inspire an entire group to move together, much like how we launched #YouthBoostHB. After the video, I threw out a challenge: Guess what today’s topic is! People threw out guesses like teamwork, leadership, and taking initiatives. ??

Then came the big reveal: Communication. But not just any kind of communication—“Communication (Not English).” You could see some puzzled looks at first, but that curiosity was exactly what I wanted! ??

The Real Deal: Communication Beyond Words

We kicked off by breaking down the modes of communication—voice, chat, email, and body language. What surprised many was when we pointed out that chat is often the toughest form of communication. Most of us assume it’s the easiest because it’s quick and convenient, but without the help of tone, expressions, or body language, misunderstandings can happen quickly. ?

Then we dug deeper into the purpose of communication, which set the foundation for everything that followed. What’s the goal? What’s the message? What are you really trying to convey? These questions got everyone thinking. ????

Real Problems, Real Feelings: Sound Familiar?

Here’s where the session truly became relatable. We talked about the everyday communication challenges people face, the ones we don’t always openly discuss. Here are some real-world examples we explored:

?? “I feel like I’m not heard, no matter what I say.”Have you ever spoken up, only to feel like no one’s really listening or taking you seriously? This is a problem many face in meetings or brainstorming sessions.

?? “I want to contribute, but I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing.”This fear holds back so many people from sharing great ideas or thoughts, worried they’ll be judged or misunderstood.

??♂? “My team misunderstands me when I send messages, and things go off track.”In today’s fast-paced world, where chat and emails are common, clarity often gets lost in translation, leading to confusion and mistakes.

?? “I’m confident when I talk in person, but nervous when it’s a written message.”There’s often a gap between how confidently we communicate in person versus through writing or chat, where things can feel more formal and harder to express.

?? “I’m trying to be polite, but it comes off as rude.”The nuances of tone and politeness often get lost, especially when the communication is brief or hurried.

These issues sparked discussions that everyone could relate to, with nods, laughs, and even a few “Oh, that’s me!” moments throughout the room. ??

The Turning Point: Solutions That Start with You

After discussing the challenges, we moved on to the part everyone was waiting for—solutions. And here’s where it got interesting. I asked, “Do I have solutions for you?” The answer was yes. But then I followed it up with, “Can I help you fix this?” The answer: no. Why? Because you are the one who has to help yourself. ??

We explored how, with a few practical changes, anyone can improve their communication. Simple steps like starting small, being more mindful about the purpose of what you’re saying, and paying attention to how you say it. Everyone started thinking about what they could do differently the very next day at work. ??

Communication Beyond Words: Body Language

One major takeaway from the session was the power of body language. Even when we’re silent, our body is always communicating something. Whether it’s on a video call or face-to-face, your body speaks before you even say a word. We dived deep into how improving body language alone can transform how people perceive your message. ???

Still Hungry?

We ran over time (always a good sign), and I asked if everyone still had the energy to continue. The answer was a resounding yes! This was great because it showed just how engaged everyone was. And we still had more to share. ??

Takeaways: Communicate to Express, Not to Impress

Before wrapping up, we gave the team some practical homework—things they could try out during the week. From body language exercises to handling tricky conversations, the goal was simple: help each person become a more effective communicator in their own unique way. ??

And we ended with one final thought that sums up the entire session: Communicate to Express, Not to Impress. It’s not about fancy words or showing off how well you speak—it’s about making sure your message gets through, loud and clear. ??
