Real Application Clusters (RAC)
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) supports the transparent deployment of a single database across pools of server, providing fault tolerance from hardware failures or planned outages.
Oracle RAC offers clustered managed services for automatic workload management. By effectively managing workloads on a common standard, hardware and other related costs outside such standards can be reduced. RAC can scale up to 100 servers in a pool. Oracle RAC also provides flexibility for scaling applications. In order to keep costs low, server pools can be built on standardized, commodity-priced servers, storage pools, and network components.When you need more processing power, simply add another server without taking users offline to gain horizontal scalability.
Finally, Oracle RAC provides a single image installation and management. Database administrators have a single point of control to install and manage an Oracle RAC cluster using a graphical user interface or command line tools. Oracle RAC supports packaged or custom business applications of all kinds without the need to make changes. This includes OLTP, DSS, and Oracle’s unique ability to effectively support mixed OLTP/DSS environments.
Additionally, Oracle RAC supports container and pluggable databases via Oracle Multitenant. All of these features help IT standardization efforts.
