Real Analysts for IT Must Be Information and Systems Experts

Why Should Analysts for IT (Business Analysts, Business Process Analysts, Systems Analysts, ...) be Experts in Information and Systems ?

1) Companies are socio-technical systems producing and sell products and services. These systems deploy business activities. The business community develops the products and services and defines the business model, the strategies, the policies and the operations. They define the way business is conducted and they solve business problems.

2) These business activities cannot be executed without information. Information needs at any level have to be satisfied and information problems have to be solved. Without information, it wouldn’t be possible to manage the company. Information is a very valuable and a critical resource for companies and other organisations. Information has to be maximally exploited in order to support the business activities as much as possible. Therefore, a maximal of valuable information has to be captured. Its quality and value has to be optimal. Information has to be well organised and be present at the right place at the right time. Information may even drive business activities in ways the business community doesn’t expect. All this can only be achieved when information is treated by systems, and preferably automated systems. Analysts and Architects create these systems which use information as a resource. They have to be experts in systems (Systemology, Systems Thinking) and in Information (Information Science).

3) Once the information question has been answered, the technological question remains: How to translate this into concrete systems and how to use technologies to build these systems? This solves technological problems. This combines software engineering skills with technological skills.

We observe clearly, not just three distinct levels of thinking (business, information & systems) technologies), but also three domains which are very different in nature and thus require specific expertise and skills.

Conceiving the information exploitation system of a company is not an activity. Although it takes business knowledge and expertise into account, it has little to do with the common business professions. This is a specific professional discipline that has to be mastered because it is crucial for the company.
