Readying your Business for New Normal? 'Safety' is the most important word

AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson says car sales will surge as people opt for safety in a personal commuting space as opposed to public transport.

Regional Tourism folk say holidays are going to be spent within a one-or-two day driving distance from home as people seek safety by avoiding airports.

Korea is talking about going ‘cashless’ because people don’t feel safe using physical money.

The key word moving forward into New Normal is safety – CovidSafe as the Australians put it.

Every business, large and small, needs to re-do its messaging around this simple word.

If you own a small nail salon, you need to re-do your website and stickers on your window to include CovidSafe messaging.

If you own a corner store, you need to visibly promote steps you are taking to ensure a CovidSafe environment – how often you clean and sanitize, how you handle money, are your staff tested?

If you are a partner in a law firm, you need to not only make your clients feel safe in your environment, but your staff also. You need to re-work your policies around meeting room use, around work-from-home, around travel, staff canteen use, etc. All of these require a reworking and re-development of your messaging, your websites, your contracts, your brochures, your business cards.

Will there even be business cards in a CovidSafe New Normal?

If you own a car dealership then, like AutoNation, you might hand clients a single-use pen in a sanitised plastic satchel to sign contracts.

If you own an Airbnb, you need to convince arriving customers your space is safe – you will need messaging and physical examples and displays to promote confidence – for example, all the kitchen items might be in some kind of sanitised packaging.

If you own a food service business, you need to talk about health and safety in your kitchen and in your dining area.

New Normal is going to be all about coaxing people out of their homes and back into the real world. It is going to be all about safety.
