Ready to work cut style, backing bells only.
These are nautical terms which are only use in the Panama Canal.
- The first one "cut style", means the tugboat has the 2 lines secure on the ship′s stern but splitt as it appears on the photograph. This way to secure the tugboat on the stern "cut style" started at 1959 for operational needs, and its name came for the Gailard Cut (the narrower reach on the Panama Canal).
- The second one "backing bells only" has a meaning related to the first one. Since the tugs made up cut style are used to push or back the stern either to starboard, port or in line, it is neccesary for the tug captain to let the pilot know if he can lean on the stern to push.If the aft draft of the ship is too low and the stern is completely or partially out of the water so the tug can not lean on the ship′s transom, it is neccesary for the tug master to inform the pilot ready to work cut style backing bells only, and the pilot will know he can just ask for backing orders only.
