It takes 499 seconds for light to reach earth,
Around 279 to 292 days for a cow to deliver a calf,
A grafted Mango trees take 3 to 4 years to give you a mango,
An egg turns to a butterfly in about 4 weeks.
Thus, nature has defined the gestation period of everyone’s life cycle and most of us respect that and don’t interfere in it.
But what about Humans - their potential, performance and pace? Is there any defined gestation for a
- Sales Professional to achieve his target
- A software developer to develop a software
- A doctor to perform a surgery
- A company to achieve its vision?
All these timelines are defined by stakeholders, driven by ambition, executed by employees and evaluated on the basis of target achievement.
Roger Bannister was the first person to a mile under 4 minutes. Before that, experts said for years that the human body was simply not capable of a 4-minute mile. It wasn’t just dangerous; it was impossible. Further legends hold that people had tried for over a thousand years to break the barrier, even tying bulls behind them to increase the incentive to do the impossible. And it took only 46 days to break Roger’s record too.
Every organization wants a Roger Bannister in their company to challenge the status quo, to be able to create that certainty without seeing any proof that it could be done, to believe that the ‘Results, Rewards and Returns’ can grow at an exponential rate.
When the distance is stated (the Vision and Mission of the company), the timelines are defined, the only thing left to make it happen is the ‘Speed’ at which the employees work and hopefully in harmonic progression.
In our obsession to compare, compete and be competent, let’s also choose to CARE.
Remember that we are a Human Race, and not in a rat race!
