We had our first in person performance at the Willow Sound Studio for a small VIP fan group event! Finally. It was heavenly...like finding yourself on the edge of an oasis sipping delicious, refreshing water after being lost in the desert for months. The sound of applause, the banter back and forth between artist and audience, the energy....and the shared love of music tying it all together. It was living. Finally.
There is so much unspoken in a shared experience of live music because so much cannot be put into words. It's a feeling. A real, feel good feeling. And it's connection. Connection to each other but also connection in a moment. We are pulled in so many directions in our day by all the demands in our life and a live music event keeps us grounded in a shared experience. Songs keep us in a moment but also transport us up and down the river of our memory banks as we follow along to the storytelling. Live music is simply magical.
It will be a long, hard road before the live music sector to fully recovers. But I hope along the way, we find a new appreciation for the value of live music in our every day lives maybe even reminiscent of a time when live music was the only source of entertainment and distraction from every day life. I love experiencing pockets of cultures around the world where live music is seamlessly woven into the daily life...front porch jams in the South, live bands in the Italian piazzas, East Coast kitchen parties, French Canadian folk songs at your local Cabane à Sucre. Little gems.
Live music has a way of calling to us, of reminding us to live in a moment...to connect with one another. Whether you enjoy small intimate house concert gatherings or large multi-thousand people events, the experience stays with us. They are memory makers. And they reminds us to live our best life.
For me, I know for sure that I will be seeking out more live music events now that I have experienced losing them. Because music is my work, sometimes I put it all in that bucket and forget that feeding my own soul with live music performed by someone not me, or not any of my clients and not to scout for new talent, is a great way to reconnect with myself and fill up my own well of creativity. In the past, it sometimes felt like too much effort...the driving, the parking, getting a seat, will I even like the band playing? Will I love the music or will I be stuck there unable to escape??
But now? Bring it on! All of it! I want to seek out and soak up every live show I can find! I realize this will probably wear off a little but the one thing that will not wear off is remembering that live music makes me happy and makes me feel wholly human. It brings me joy and reminds me to stay connected to the moment and connected to others. The pandemic has been difficult but the reminder to not take live music for granted is one gift it gave me.
