Ready, Set, Ignite Part 2

Ready, Set, Ignite Part 2

Welcome to the TLS Continuum Change Maestro’s Roadmap newsletter. A new edition will be released every Tuesday on LinkedIn. It is by nature an interactive newsletter. What do I mean? As you will see below and in every week’s edition there will be a step presented in the roadmap (maybe). Part of each edition will be one or more dialogue prompts. To continue to the next step, I expect to see some contribution from you the reader by commenting on the dialogue question. If a dialogue goes unanswered, we will continue to talk about the step until there is some feedback.

I thank Ben Cross for his contribution to the discussion. Ben’s response for those of you who might have missed it, said the reason his organization exists is to connect people and companies. He went on to state that they aspire to transform futures. The response is what I would expect from most businesses when responding to the questions. However, it does not go far enough. It sounds like a response to a discussion rather than a dialogue.

?Robert Kaplan and David Norton, in their book Strategy Maps, tells us that part of the understanding our strategies is to align the strategy with the rest of the organization. That means we need to understand our values, mission, culture and Strategies. So, what do we mean by the terms?

?Kaplan and Norton tell us that Mission is why we exist. Values is what is important to us. Vision is what do you want to be. Strategy is how are we going to get there. Let me relate this to our three questions from last week.

Dialogue Question 1: Why do we exist?

Dr. Tony Alessandra believes that the reason why organizations exist is to acquire and maintain customers. Tutor2U website says that our organizations exist to 1) create and sustain employment;2) Drive innovation; Contribute to your community; 3) contribute revenue to the government and 4) create wealth. The learning organization tells us that our organization exist through our value proposition we establish the essence of our business.

Dialogue Question 2: As an organization what is important to you?

Ben’s response told us the direction the organization is going, it did not relate what was important to the organization beyond the mission. We are not flying in the wind and hoping for success. The expectation is that we know and understand what factors make the organization attractive to our human capital assets and maybe more important to our clients.

Dialogue Question #3: What is the future of your organization? What do you want it to be?

Are you coming to work just to collect that paycheck or does work have a deeper meaning for you? The valuable part of the value proposition is that through open dialogue we can explore our answers more in depth.

?Return for a moment to the Kaplan/Norton stages. Dialogue question 1 was asking you with the assistance of your co-workers determine the mission of your organization. It is not done in a vacuum and need the commitment and contribution of the entire organization. Dialogue question 2 takes your responses from why you exist and looks at what is really important to you and the organization. For example, the generations in your organization look for a meaningful and valued organization. But what does that mean? Finally Dialogue question 3 brings in the design thinking stage and lets you run wild and if you could do anything you wanted what would your organization look like in 5, 10 or 25 years from where you are standing right now.

?Here is your assignment for this week. Return to the three question below and rethink your answers. Have they changed from last week? Enter your responses as comments on the edition of the week.

Dialogue Question 1: Why does your organization exist?

Dialogue Question 2: As an organization what is important to you?

Dialogue Question 3: What is the future of your organization? What do you want to be?

Here is a side trip. Ask the three questions from your own personal perspective? Are your answers similar?

Daniel, I hope and pray your contract and project are going forward well. In connection to my previous comments the people who run organizations should get up every morning and ask themselves, "what is my/our purpose?"

Just as human beings should strive, in the words of Jackie Robinson, organizations like people, "should" exist to add value and have an impact on other people's lives!
