Ready for New Challenges
For those of a certain age, you will remember the classic BBC TV series, The Shock of the New, written and presented by the wonderful Robert Hughes.
Whilst Hughes' global travels in that series, explaining the development of modern art, make for far more interesting television than my recent experiences, I hope a few of my thoughts may prove useful.
This month I have changed jobs, changed country and changed industry. Plenty of new shocks. All exciting and I walked into my new office on day one ready to make things happen. I have ideas, plans, and things I want to try and it would be so easy to unleash some or all of them on my new team and colleagues.
But patience is a virtue and I realise I need to spend a good amount of my time watching and listening, building up an understanding of the organisation and its people. Over time I will see things that are different to how I would normally do things but work perfectly well and don't need me meddling with. There will be areas where I can look at changes and improvements but, by knowing where to leave things well alone any changes I propose will have much betters chances of being accepted (and even embraced).
