Ready for networking? Three simple tips to maximise your networking potential

Networking is one of a business’s most powerful tools. The often-dismissive line ‘it’s not what you know’ has a ring of truth because, as social creatures, we naturally prefer dealing with people that we already know and trust. But if the word ‘networking’ sends a shudder down your spine, then don’t worry, you are not alone: most people feel the same way.

Networking and networking events are incredibly useful, and the personal connections you can make can help boost your business. So, whatever you think about networking, how can you make the most of networking opportunities that you have?

How to enjoy networking

Most people think it’s impossible to enjoy networking, but by making sure you are ready for the session (and reminding yourself that everyone is there for the same reason) helps you relax and make the most of the networking potential of an event or even a chance encounter.

1. Make sure you are armed with information

Make sure you have all the information you might need with you, ideally, in your head, but at the very least with you. You don’t know where conversations might lead, and being able to answer questions about your business on the spot might come in incredibly useful.

And, if you are attending an event, it’s always worth a little research on the others attending. Even if you don’t know the attendees, you might know the sectors they are from, or at least the areas they serve. This helps not just to make conversation but allows you to think about whom you might want to meet.

2. Know what you want

Remember that networking events are about making connections and helping each other, so don’t be afraid to go in with an ask in mind.

Obviously, you probably won’t be spending a session signing contracts, but if you know that you are looking for new clients or suppliers, don’t be afraid to say. Even if the person you are talking to might not be interested, they might know someone who is, and can point you in their direction. That’s the point of networking.

And if you don’t want anything, that’s fine. Don’t be afraid to attend just to make contacts. You never know, you might use one of those contacts in the future, or a phone call comes in a few months turning one of those contacts into a new client.

3. Think about first impressions

Although it’s not a job interview, don’t forget that people form judgements quickly. This isn’t just about dressing smartly since networking events are typically casual. Although there are limits, a personal trainer can wear sports leisure, but people might not expect that from someone working in professional services!

Instead, think about the broader impression you create. The first two tips will help, since they will ensure you are prepared. But also take care to make sure you are sharing — not spending all your time talking or listening — to reflect the two-way nature of networking.

Put it all into practice

Like anything, the more you do something, the easier it gets and the better you get. And there’s no better time to start than the present. Whether you have a great new idea, want to help new businesses take off, or just want to get to know more people in your local business community, then come along to our next networking event. Attendance is free, but spaces are limited, so if you want to come along, register today.
