Let’s face the climate crisis with positive solutions and new technologies.

The biggest myth about the climate crisis? That we're screwed, it's too late and we might as well give up. We’ve got a fighting chance, we just have to calculate our own carbon emissions, bring them down fast and simultaneously remove historic and present carbon from the atmosphere. Easy peezy, right?

Well, if you’re ready to get started in reaching net zero, we’re here to help you through the jungle. So #jointheremovement and throw on your super hero cape, because we're not ready to sit back and relax.

California’s new bill bans textiles with “forever chemicals”

In positive climate news, Californias governor has recently signed a bill into action that will phase out per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from clothing and textiles.

PFAS are called “forever chemicals” as they don’t break down in the environment. They are linked to serious ailments including cancer, reduced fertility, liver damage and thyroid disease. A study found PFAS in 100% of breast milk samples and also found that detection of PFAS are doubling every four years. A study by Toxic-Free Future found these chemicals are often labelled “stain and water-resistant” and the study identified better options than PFAS.

Here’s a look at Scope 1, 2 and 3 of carbon emissions.

For a company to lower carbon emissions, calculating the company’s carbon output is the first step and that’s where Scope 1, 2 and 3 of carbon emissions comes into play. Scope 1, 2 and 3 gives a fair outline of what a company actually emits, not only directly, but also indirectly through the supply chain.

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol outlines three scopes by which companies should calculate their emissions:

Scope 1: Direct emissions

The first scope consists of emissions produced directly by the organisation. More closely explained they are emissions that are released into the atmosphere as a direct result of a set of activities, at a firm level

Scope 2: Indirect emissions

This scope represents indirect emissions from the company’s own operations and includes purchasing of electricity, heat, steam or cooling.

Scope 3: Indirect value chain emissions

These emissions are often a company's highest. The third scope includes indirect emissions from sources that are not controlled by the company, but are emitted because of the company’s operations.

Why planting a trillion trees isn’t helping.

Trees are increasingly vulnerable to drought, wildfires, disease and human interference.

Planting trees on a large-scale can be harmful to nature, minimizing biodiversity and harming native species. Many projects plant non-native invasive species that are not meant for the local climate, which in turn can wipe out local species. By planting only one type of tree, monocultures also lead to lack of biodiversity, drying out the soil and leading to drought.

Tree compensation projects have burned in wildfires in the past years. If we look at one example in California, roughly 153,000 hectares of climate-compensated forest burned up in a wildfire. This forest was planned to capture 32 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

In order to remain under the IPCC’s recommended 1,5 degrees we need to remove 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year until 2050. If we’re relying on new trees, we will already have reached 2050 by the time these trees start absorbing carbon, if they are still standing. Instead, we need to invest in fast, scalable, viable and innovative carbon removal technologies.

The first step in getting to net zero is calculating your emissions.

By calculating your emissions, you take an important first step towards being a sustainable business. This climate tool is science based and follows the GHG protocol, which is the internationally accepted accounting standard for emissions calculations.
