Ready for Actionship(??): Increase Black Representation at Your Organization

Are you looking to increase representation at your organization? I want you to pause at this moment and imagine a scenario with me.

It’s my first time meeting you at a party and in a group of mutual connections. I’m talking to everyone else, but I never acknowledge you the entire time, not even eye contact. The event ends and it’s Monday morning. I have a huge project that I need support on. I discussed it with a friend from the party, who tells me that you are an expert on the subject and suggests I should reach out. I do just that and share that we met at the event and were referred to you for guidance.

Would you trust me??

Would you feel excited to support me?

I never considered or even acknowledged you in the group.

Would you feel used?

This is how many who identify as Black within the workplace feel. Many feel they are simply a NUMBER. The days of solely focusing on LinkedIn or other common platforms to find and recruit Black talent is getting old.?

The number 1 question my clients ask me is how to best increase representation. I love getting this question, because not only does it mean they’re ready to engage in what I call “Actionship?,”? there are many actions that they can take immediately. First, I tell my clients that they must start by identifying several key factors:

  1. Which race/ethnicity demographic is lacking the most within your organization?
  2. Be honest with yourself and acknowledge why this gap exists within your organization! You must tap into your gap or it will be difficult to solve.
  3. You didn’t care about this topic until you received pressure from employees or DEI industry-wide pressure?
  4. It didn’t personally impact you?
  5. You tried convincing leadership, but they didn’t see the issue.
  6. You only used standard networking platforms to recruit (mostly LinkedIn).
  7. Do your research and create a list of events for the year that focuses on Black professionals. Don’t wait for your Black friend or DEI leader to do this for you.
  8. Speak with folks when you attend the event.

With the answers to these questions, we work together on building a plan for success.
