Reading & Leeds overhauled, Boomtown in expansion push, SGP to host festival of festivals

On the back of what seems like endless bad news about UK festivals, it's great to see some positive steps forward. Much has been said about changing ticket buying behaviour, the challenges of marketing to Gen Z and indeed different F&B trends among the younger generation, so it’s interesting to see Festival Republic thoroughly refresh its offering at the Reading & Leeds Festivals.

Boomtown Festival is also pushing boldly forward having successfully maintained its license following a review triggered by Hampshire Constabulary. Luke Mitchell and the Boomtown team are looking to secure a capacity extension to 76,999 from the current 65,999.

At the AIF Congress in Bristol last week, Chai Wallahs & Diplomats of Sound creative director Si Chai revealed details of a remarkable new festival concept. Described as a “festival of festivals”, Grassroots Rising festival is being launched to unite several festivals on one site to support independent events that have been unable to proceed on their own due to financial constraints.

In other news, Little Simz is to curate Meltdown, Moby and UK Climate Minister Kerry McCarthy will be taking to the stage at GEI, Chelsea FC has partnered with Live Nation, Allianz Stadium Twickenham is to host its first K-pop show and Save Our Scene’s George Fleming outlines the importance to the industry of the recently launched Music Fans’ Voice survey.

Reading & Leeds Festival to undergo historic overhaul

Festival Republic has announced that it is overseeing the biggest site changes to its Reading Festival (cap. 105,000) and Leeds Festival (75,000) dual event series since it was launched.

The Live Nation-owned promoter said the changes to the event this year represent a huge investment to provide a “world-leading, tailored experience for a new generation”.

Winchester City Council’s licensing sub-committee has granted Boomtown Festival its premises licence for alcohol and music, which means the event will go ahead at Matterley Estate from August 10-15 with a lineup including Maribou State, Sex Pistols and Sean Paul.
