Hello hello,
Good news first. Happiness at work newsletter has got 2222 subscribers so far! The number was so irresistible that I had to mention. :)
Good news no. 2 - Read Beyond Books chapter 5 is happening this Saturday in Koramangala Bangalore. You can register yourself here and let's have a great time with great conversations on Saturday.
November is unwrapping itself in mysterious ways, isn't it? Layoffs, hiring, year-end targets. And managing our well-being amongst all of this can be a bit much. First things first, take a deep breath. Focus and let's get through this week with poise and passion.
1 Concept to absorb
Twitter firing boomeranged and how!
Twitter sacked almost 50% of its workforce globally, in an effort to reduce costs as the company was reportedly making losses. This layoff was largely carried out via emails for both the retained and sacked workers. As per media reports, workers who were retained received retention emails on their official ids, and those who were sacked received emails via their personal ids.
It's a well-known fact that Twitter doesn't make a lot of money so looking at their expenses and trying to reduce them is something every leader should do, and so did the Twitter leadership. The question is the method used. Industry experts believe that firing employees without notice and through email is just the worse way of dealing with the problem. If almost 50% of employees have been asked to leave, that clarifies one thing. The firing is not on the basis of performance, it's on the basis of company sustainability and future. In that case, a more sympathetic way to deal with employees was expected.
An Inc.com piece literally says 'A general principle of leadership is that if you make a decision that affects the lives of 4,000 people who work for you, the least you can do is sign your name. You can do better Elon. You should do better.'
It also says Twitter isn't the first tech company to do a bad job of letting go of employees. Online mortgage broker Better.com laid off?900 employees during a Zoom call, which is arguably the worst possible way to notify people. I guess there is probably no great way to go about telling people you're no longer going to pay them anymore, but there are definitely less terrible ways. Firing them by email is bad.
The story doesn't end there. The firing created chaos and confusion not only for the employees but for the global workforce as well. Because it?might even be illegal. There are questions as to whether Twitter is violating the law by laying off that many employees without notice. California's WARN act requires a 60-day notice to employees and to the state if a company with more than 75 employees intends to institute a mass layoff.?
Now comes problem no. 2
After making headlines for mass layoffs, Twitter has now reportedly asked some of the fired workers to join back. According to a report by Bloomberg, the?Elon Musk-led micro-blogging platform is now asking these fired employees to return as they were “laid off by mistake.” The sudden layoffs at?Twitter, right after Elon Musk's takeover also seemed hasty and chaotic to many industry experts.

It's just lesson after lesson about how to treat our employees. Twitter might be one of the biggest companies in the world, but after all this, how many employees will look forward to working with Twitter? It has a stench of bad leadership, hasty decisions, and a lack of care for employees all over it.
Alexander Kjerulf, Co-Founder, Heartcount. CHO, Woohoo Inc. has a very interesting perspective on this. watch this video?to see his thoughts on laying off staff and how it adversely affects the company.
