Is reading dead?

Shark Tank is the new trend-setting platform, it seems. And, without a doubt, one can say that Gen Z thrives on trends. Remember ‘Chapter One’? It is a company that pitched the Sharks on how their platform wants to promote an impactful reading culture in India. They were dejected after one of the sharks made this statement: “It’s a declining business in India.”

The fact that you are reading this article on a screen instead of a book is a testament in itself. We don’t know about the business, but we are sure that other than the textbooks, the answer to “When was the last time you read a book?” will be “It’s been days, weeks, and even months.” However, this article isn’t the one that will label Gen Z as the problem behind global warming, depleting natural resources, and even drastically reducing attention span.

“I have the attention span of a squirrel” seems to be the most common phrase since the advent of 5G. Internet speed has skyrocketed, resulting in more downloads, better video quality, affordable devices with touch screens, and most importantly, more information in merely 60 seconds. When the digital revolution is offering so much, why wouldn’t we shift to digital?

India has over 600 million users who are hooked on seeking entertainment from machines. Instead of newspapers, it’s e-papers, tweets, Reddit notifications, and Instagram reels. We are spending 2-4 hours a day on our phones, and maybe even more. From news, memes, trends, courses, and jobs, we have shifted digital.

But let’s face it. If no one is reading books, then how are the revolutionary ideas hitting the world? The hungry and brilliant minds are still reading. While we have fallen prey to doomsday scrolling, there are people who are striving to improve themselves. You know, how did one get an idea about machine learning? Through books.

Reading might be dead in a year or two. After all, humans are hooked on seeking entertainment from machines while machines are learning. This is going to be the topic of our next article. So, stay tuned.
