Reader's Digest
2020: Book #4 (x12)
I was introduced to this bundle of treasure at a young age. Back then I couldn't afford to buy the book. There was a small circulating library near my house run by a soft-and-yet-strict Retd., colonel uncle. The issues would be few months delayed - probably waiting for somebody to donate and then we would get to borrow it.
In the days of non-existent technology, this book served as a window to the outside world. The articles and stories were from around the world, and would provide us some very interesting insights.
Now, I am a regular subscriber and I wait for the fresh issue in the beginning of every month! Its a great companion for me when I eat my food or when I am not in the mood for any heavy reading, but just want to relax. Few things which has struck me while reading these for so many years now:
- Its a very positive digest. Almost all articles have a positive undertone. Even the so called tragic stories speak about the courage of the survivors or the next of kin. I have never felt sad or troubled after reading one.
- It makes you appreciate simpler pleasures of life. The "Humor in uniform" or "All in a day's work" gives us a glimpse of simpler lives and how you can have fun with it!
- Heroes - are not super natural or fictional characters. They are regular people who rise up to challenging situations and become heroes. Most of the real life stories in the digest are about this theme.
- Its a great Travel Companion - Thanks to Covid, I am missing out on my travels. But these digests were a great companion for me during those as its light to carry and light to read!
All in all its a great book. If you haven't read them at all - you sure have missed something :)

3 年Took me back to the memory lane. I used to be an avid Readers diggers reader. It used have a vocabulary page right in the beginning.
Nostalgic ! They used to have a form inside on which we could fill addresses of friends and family who might subscribe to RD. On sending such forms to RD, they used to send free books. Had quite a collection!
